Sexton Sets UWG Career Strikeout Record in Win

Carrollton, GA - It almost didn't seem as though it was the rubber game of the series, as the day belonged to pitcher Jamie Sexton and West Georgia as the Wolves shut out Montevallo for the second time in two games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Cole Field.

Sexton pitched brilliantly on the day and looked like the All-American from 2013, going eight innings and allowing no runs on two hits. The highlight of the game came in the fifth inning as Sexton broke the UWG strikeout record with his 214th strikeout of his great career.

The Wolves started out the game strong by giving Sexton early run support, setting the tone for the game. After Tyler Hutch was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and Sumner McWhorter singled to left center, cleanup hitter Garrett Hayes delivered a single to center field that drove in two runs. UWG would add another run in the second inning when Hutch gounded out to shortstop and a throwing error by the Falcons allowed Artemis Kadkhodaian to score.

In the game, UWG capitalized on six errors by Montevallo, which led to three runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the eighth. The top four of the lineup for the Wolves, that included Hutch, McWhorter, Dalton Rodgers, and Hayes, each had at least one RBI and also accounted for four of the teams nine hits. Kadkhodaian contributed two hits on the day and scored a team-high three runs.

Sexton was the star of the game and he dominated Montevallo's lineup. He started the first inning with two strikouts and never looked back. For the game, Sexton threw 97 pitches, of which 66 were strikes. Tyler Gunnin came on to pitch the 9th inning for the Wolves and he struck out a batter and allowed no hits to close out the fifth victory of the season for UWG.

The UWG Baseball team just finishes a six-game homestand with a record of 5-1 to begin the season. The Wolves will now head out on the road for the first time this season, as they play Stillman in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday, February 10th at 3pm.
