Carrollton, GA - The newly ranked UWG Baseball team will continue their road trip as they travel to Milledgeville to take on Georgia College on Wednesday, March 11th at John Kurtz Field. The Wolves are playing very well as we approach the halfway mark of the season and currently have a seven game winning streak on the line against the Bobcats.
For the first time under head coach
Skip Fite, the Wolves break into the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top-25 after winning seven straight games. West Georgia landed in a tie with Lynn at 21st place on the list which features three Gulf South Conference teams. Also for the first time this season, the Wolves have entered the top-10 in the NCBWA South Region Rankings. UWG is currently in a tie for seventh place with Valdosta State and is the first time they have been in the rankings since the 2013 season.
Coming into the game against Georgia College, the UWG Baseball team has been on fire winning seven straight ballgames to put their season record at 14-5. During the winning streak, the Wolves have outscored their opponents by 22 runs and they have not allowed more than four runs in those seven games. A key to the season and the recent hot streak has been the sixth inning. The Wolves are 11-0 when leading after the 6th and 1-4 when trailing.
Brandon Goldsmith is coming off a complete game shutout against Mississippi College to propel the team to their eight Conference victory and the three game sweep of the Choctaws.
Over the past several weeks, the Wolves offense has been a key factor to the success of the ball club. As a team, UWG is hitting .290 while their opponents have only hit .239. Also, the team has already scored 124 runs on the season compared to 58 by their opponents. Two players for the Wolves that are leading the offense are
Tyler Hutch and
Garrett Hayes. Hutch is hitting a team high .400 and has scored 26 runs on the season. Hayes has the second highest batting average at .385 and he has 23 RBI out of the cleanup spot which leads the team.
Georgia College at a Glance
The Georgia College Bobcats are coming into the game with a record of 6-11 and they are 2-7 in the PBC. They lost two of three games this past weekend against North Georgia. The leading hitter on the team is Dylan Cook who is hitting .352 with two home runs and 14 RBI. Jake Anthony is the leading pitcher for the Bobcats and he is 1-2 with a 6.46 ERA in 23.2 innings.
