Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Baseball team will travel to Rome on Sunday, March 15th to take on the Shorter Hawks at Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex. The three game series will begin on Sunday because of the threat of bad weather on Saturday. On Sunday, a doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00pm followed by the second game of the series. The final game will take place on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00pm.
The pitching trio of
Jamie Sexton,
Matthew Norton, and
Brandon Goldsmith have led the Wolves to a 14-6 record and second place in the GSC. They have combined for a record of 8-3 and all three have one complete game. The trio have accounted for 93.2 innings which is well over half of the innings pitched for the team. Sexton leads the staff in almost every major statistical category with four wins, 40.2 innings pitched, and a 2.45 ERA. Norton has also been very impressive for the Wolves with two wins and an ERA of 3.12 in 34.2 innings pitched. Goldsmith is coming off his best start of the season with a complete game shutout against Mississippi College and he also has two wins on the season and a 2.89 ERA.
After the three game sweep of the Choctaws this past weekend, the Wolves have gone from seventh in the Conference to second. Heading into the weekend series against Shorter, UWG has won seven straight GSC games after starting Conference play 1-4. Leading the Conference is Alabama Huntsville who has a record of 8-1-1 in the GSC. Shorter is currently in sixth place, three games behind UWG, entering the weekend series with a conference record of 5-4.
A big key for UWG when they travel to Rome this weekend will be scoring first in the game. When the Wolves score first this season, they are 9-2 as opposed to 5-4 when their opponent scores first. In away games, the Wolves have only scored 5 runs in the first two innings while their opponents have scored 10. Also a key point in the series will be the fifth inning which the Wolves have scored 16 runs in away games, and their opponents have yet to score in the inning.
Shorter at a Glance
The Shorter Hawks enter the series against UWG with a record of 8-7 and they are 5-4 in the GSC. They are 1-3 in their last four games and picked up a win last time out against Albany State University. Leading the team in hitting is Zack Santos who is hitting .379 with three homruns and 19 RBI. The top pitcher on the team is Blake Weir who has a record of 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA in 18.0 innings pitched.
