UWG Falls in Midweek Game Against GSW

Carrollton, GA - After playing their fourth game in four days, the UWG Baseball team fell in a close game against Georgia Southwestern in Americus by the score of 5-4. The loss marks the second consecutive road defeat against a non-conference opponet in the last week for the Wolves.

How it Happened - The Wolves started out the game on a high note, striking first on the scoreboard with a two RBI double by Dalton Rogers in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. It would not take the Hurricanes long to fight back as they tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI double to score the first run, and a single down the left field line to score the second run. In the top of the fifth inning, the Wolves regained the lead when Tyler Hutch scored on a throwing error by the catcher to give UWG a 3-2 lead. The back and forth game continued in the bottom of the fifth when Georgia Southwestern had a two run double to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead going into the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Sumner McWhorter tied the game at 4-4 for the Wolves when he hit a fielders choice to score Taylor Bentley. The Hurricanes would answer with the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to right field to score the final run of the game.

On the Mound- Josh Morgan made his fourth start of the season for UWG and he gave up three runs on four hits while pitching into the fifth inning. After facing one batter in the fifth, Morgan would be replaced by A.J. Sunstrom, who pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits for the day. The next pitcher for the Wolves was lefty Colton Duttweiler, who took the loss for the game, but pitched well in 1.2 innings of work only giving up one hit and one run. Ethan Hunter was next on the mound for UWG as he came in the game during the seventh inning with two outs, and he only faced two batters but gave up the game deciding hit. Chris Burdette pitched the eighth inning for the Wolves giving up no hits and recording his 12 strikeout of the season.

At the Plate - West Georgia had 10 hits for the game, but they left eight runners on base in what would be the difference in the ballgame. Leading the team in hitting was Tyler Hutch and Dalton Rogers. Hutch had a team high three hits and also scored two runs for the team while Rogers led the Wolves with two RBI and he also had two hits. Third baseman Sumner McWhorter was the only other UWG player with an RBI, and Artemis Kadkhodaian was the only other Wolf with multiple hits on the day.

What it Means - The game on Wednesday ends an eight game road trip in which the team went 6-2 away from Cole Field. It was the fourth defeat on the road this season and the seventh overall for the Wolves. UWG plays Georgia Southwestern one more time this season as they will travel to Carrollton on April 22 for the rematch.
