Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves finished up a three-game series with West Florida on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field as UWG split the doubleheader with the Argos losing the first game 5-2, and winning the second game 6-1. While an 11-game GSC winning streak came to a close with the loss in game one, the win in the second game secured the Wolves' fourth straight GSC series victory, as UWG won 2-of-3 over the Argos.
In the first game of the day,
Brandon Goldsmith made his fifth start for the season and he pitched well, but he struggled with his command all game long walking five batters in 5.1 innings of work. Goldsmith faced 24 batters on the day and he gave up three earned runs on two hits. The Argos did not get their first hit of the game until the fifth inning as Goldsmith was effectively wild early in the game. The Wolves scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Payton Mann doubled down the left field line scoring
Tyler Hutch. It did not take the Argos long to responded as they would take the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two run homer by Ledarious Clark to take a 2-1 lead. UWG would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Sumner McWhorter would score on a wild pitch. The Argos would take control of the game in the sixth inning and they would end up scoring three more runs in the game and the final score was 5-2 West Florida.
Much like Goldsmith, the West Georgia relievers struggled with control but the bullpen only allowed two earned runs in just over three innings of work.
Ethan Hunter pitched 2.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits and
Colton Duttweiler would finish the game for the Wolves going 1.1 innings and allowing two hits. At the plate, the team only had six hits for the game and the leader on offense was
Sumner McWhorter who had two hits and scored one run.
Payton Mann had the only RBI on the team after hitting a double down the line. No one else had more than two hits for UWG.
Game two was a different story for the West Georgia Baseball team. The Wolves were able to take control of the game in the first three innings and let starter
Matthew Norton dictate the pace of the game. Norton followed up his complete game shutout last weekend with another very good start. He went six strong innings giving up one run on six hits. The Wolves scored two runs in the second inning to take an early lead when
Drew Eady singled to center field. They would score three more runs in the third inning on RBI hits by
Payton Mann,
Sumner McWhorter, and
Artemis Kadkhodaian to take a 5-0 lead. Both teams would score a run in the fifth inning to wrap up the scoring for the game.
Drew Eady and
Artemis Kadkhodaian led the Wolves on offense in game two of the doubleheader with two RBI each. The catcher
Payton Mann also had a good game with two hits and three runs scored. The third baseman
Sumner McWhorter followed up his strong performance in game one with one hit and an RBI in game two.
The Wolves (19-8, 13-5) will be in action this week with a road game against North Georgia on Tuesday, March 24th at 5:00pm. To follow all of the action live, be sure to follow the team on Twitter @UWGAthletics.
