Carrollton, GA - The UWG Baseball team has reached the 20-win mark in a close game against the North Georgia Nighthawks. The final score from Dahlonega was 7-6 UWG, and the Wolves waited until the top of the eighth inning to score the winning run in the game.
How it Happened: It did not take long for the Wolves to score as
Tyler Hutch hit a leadoff homerun to give the team an early lead in the game. The Nighthawks fought back and scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fourth,
Tyler Hutch would continue his strong performance with a 2 RBI single to center to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, UWG would add to their lead when
Artemis Kadkhodaian hit a three-run homer to left center to give the Wolves a 6-2 lead. Just when it seemed like UWG was going to take control of the game, the Nighthawks would strike in the bottom of the fifth inning with a grand slam to tie the game up at 6-6. Late in the game,
Garrett Hayes would drive in the winning run in the top of the eighth to give the Wolves a 7-6 victory.
At the Plate: The two stars at the plate for the Wolves were
Tyler Hutch and
Artemis Kadkhodaian, who both hit their first homerun of the season in today's ballgame. The duo also had three RBI each and combined for two of the teams seven runs.
Garrett Hayes had two hits for the game to give him 34 hits on the season, including delivering a game-winning hit in two of the Wolves' last three wins. Also contributing at the plate was

On the Mound: Josh Morgan made his fifth start of the season for the Wolves, and he went four innings giving up one earned run on three hits.
Colton Duttweiler replaced Morgan on the mound to start the bottom of the fifth inning and he struggled recording only one out in the inning. He gave up three earned runs in the game after giving up a hit and walking two batters which were on base for the grand slam that
Chris Burdette gave up on the first batter he faced after replacing Duttweiler in the fifth inning. Burdette would pitch for 1.2 innings and he gave up one run on three hits for the Wolves. In the seventh inning,
A.J. Sunstrom came on to pitch and he was terrific going two innings and giving up no runs on two hits. The closer,
Tyler Gunnin, came on to pitch the ninth inning for UWG and he was very sharp giving up no hits and striking out one batter. Sunstrom would be the pitcher of record for the Wolves as he picked up his second win on the season and Gunnin recorded his sixth save of the year.
What it means: The Wolves (20-8, 13-5) picked up their first midweek victory against a non-conference opponent since beating Stillman on February 10th. The victory also ensures that the team will remain in first place of the GSC going into the weekend.
