Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves played in two very close games on Saturday and ended up spitting the doubleheader against GSC Conference opponent Delta State. The first game of the day was a heartbreaking loss for UWG as the Statesmen won the game 2-1 with a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Wolves would respond well to the tough loss in game two with a 3-2 victory.
Jamie Sexton started the first game of the day for UWG and he pitched one of his best games of the season. Sexton was the lone pitcher for the Wolves, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters. He started out the game very well, punching out four batters in the first two innings of play. Also, Sexton used the double play ball to his advantage as he got two key double plays late in the game.
The Wolves struggled offensively, as they had more strikeouts than hits in the game. But UWG would score the first run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by
Artemis Kadkhodaian that scored
Garrett Hayes. However, in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Statesman would win the game with a walk off two run homer.
Dalton Rogers led the team with two hits and Kadkhodaian had the only RBI for the Wolves.
After suffering the hard loss in game one, head coach
Skip Fite handed the ball to
Matthew Norton to start game two. Norton pitched well in 5.1 innings of work, giving up two earned runs on six hits. Delta State took an early lead in the game after they scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves would answer in the top of the fourth inning as
Garrett Hayes had an RBI double to right center field scoring
Dalton Rogers, and a throwing error by the Statesman allowed two more runs to score for UWG giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Delta State scored their last run of the game on a solo homerun to make the final score 3-2 West Georgia.
Getting the win for UWG was
Tyler Gunnin, who came into the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gunnin pitched one inning and he did not allow a hit in the game, but did walk one batter. Also pitching in the game for the Wolves was
Chris Burdette who replaced Norton in the bottom of the sixth inning. Like Gunnin, Burdette did not allow a hit, but he did walk a batter.
Leading the offense in game two was
Dalton Rogers and
Garrett Hayes who both had two hits for the game, and Hayes drove in the teams only RBI. Also, getting a hit in the game were
Artemis Kadkhodaian,
Keith Buckhault, and
Drew Eady.
