Carrollton, GA - The UWG Baseball team lost the final game of the three-game road series against Gulf South Conference opponent Delta State Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, MS. The game was reminiscent of a Sunday afternoon high scoring affair and featured many lead changes, but the Wolves were unable to hold the lead late in the ballgame against the homestanding Statesmen.
Brandon Goldsmith got his sixth start of the season for the Wolves (21-10, 14-7) and he struggled from the start, giving up six runs in 3.2 innings of work. The Statesman jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The Wolves would battle back in the top of the third inning with a seven-run rally, highlighted by
Dalton Rogers two-run double to left center field and
Drew Eady's two-run double to center.
Delta Sate would respond with three runs in the fourth inning, and one run in the six inning to tie the game at 7-7. In the top of the seventh inning, UWG scored five runs with the help of a grand slam by
Garrett Hayes to take a 12-7 lead late in the ballgame. Just when it seemed the Wolves had control of the game, the Statesman scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 13-12 lead, and they would end up winning the game by the same score.
After getting his first win in game two of the series,
Tyler Gunnin took the lose in Sunday's game. The Wolves used five pitchers on the day, and they allowed nine earned runs on 16 hits and five walks. Leading the team at the plate was left fielder
Garrett Hayes who had three hits and five RBI. Hayes hit his third home run of the season in the seventh inning when he blasted a grand slam.
Dalton Rogers and
Drew Eady both had 2 RBI on the day, and
Tyler Hutch,
Sumner McWhorter, and
Artemis Kadkhodaian all had one RBI each.
