Wolves complete sweep of the Mississippi College

Carrollton, GA - West Georgia baseball team extended their winning streak to seven straight games with a 5-0 win against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Sunday afternoon, completing their second straight GSC series sweep. The Wolves were powered by yet another brilliant pitching performance this weekend, this time from starter Brandon Goldsmith.

The junior seemingly has returned to the form that caught the eye of head coach Skip Fite and his staff when they recruited him last year. Goldsmith came into last week's series with Lee with a 9.53 ERA and was struggling to find his place. But Fite gave him a shot to close out the Wolves' third victory against Lee last weekend, and the Hamilton, Ga. native was lights out, throwing four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

That led Fite to give Goldsmith the ball on Sunday, and he was solid again, pitching a complete game and giving up no runs while scattering eight hits. It was Goldsmith's third start of the season and by far his best outing for the Wolves. He picked up his second win the the season and dropped his ERA by three points whlie giving much needed rest to a bullpen that pitched 8.2 innings over the course of two games in Saturday's doubleheader.

The game was very close as both pitchers settled in early and it wasn't until the fifth inning until the first runs were put on the board. But it would be the only scoring inning in the contest, as UWG put five runs on the board, starting as the Wolves loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, Sumner McWhorter hit a fly ball that the Choctaw right fielder dropped, scoring two runs on the play for the Wolves.

The error would be the key play in the game and the Wolves would go on to score three more runs in the inning to give them a 5-0 lead. Garrett Hayes picked up two more RBI on a single and leadoff man Tyler Hutch had a great game with three hits and one run scored from the top spot of the lineup. Artemis Kadkhodaian picked up from where he left off yesterday driving in one run on two hits for the Wolves. Dalton Rogers had two hits for the day and no one else had more than two hits.

The team has now won seven straight games all against Conference opponets to put their record at 14-5 and a record of 8-4 in the GSC, moving into a tie for second place in the standings and setting up a showdown in Rome next weekend against Shorter, the current sixth-place team.

The UWG baseball team will now travel to Milledgeville to take on Georgia College on Wednesday, March 11th. To follow the game live, be sure to click on the live stats link or follow the baseball team on Twitter @UWGAthletics
