UWG Baseball Preview: The VSU Series

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves put their 24-11 record on the line this weekend in a hostile environment, as the Wolves head south tomorrow to take on the Valdosta State Blazers in Gulf South Conference action. The Wolves and Blazers will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The game has been moved from a Saturday-Sunday series to Friday-Saturday with the threat of rain late Saturday in Valdosta. The movement of the schedule has become a norm for the 2015 season, as most of the Gulf South Conference series for UWG have been moved in one way or another. The series will go a long way to determining seeds at next months Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Wolves have been flirting with the top spot and host seed for much of the season, and VSU has been on a tear of late. West Georgia is currently third in the GSC standings while the Blazers are fifth, with the top six seeds reaching the tourney.

Wolves Rebound against North Alabama
The road is a tough place for any team in the Gulf South Conference, no matter the record, so the West Georgia Wolves were glad to return home to Cole Field last weekend against North Alabama after losing two-of-three on the road to Delta State, the first series loss for the Wolves since February 21. The Wolves won the three-game series against UNA this past weekend, taking both ends of the doubleheader before falling in the single game on Saturday.

Offense Continues to Roll
The Wolves have scored at least eight runs in four of the last five games thus far, led by six different players who are hitting at least .400 in that span. Payton Mann was on fire last weekend, going 8-for-10 on the weekend and leads the way with a .563 batting average in the last five games. Garrett Hayes is just behind at .526, and leads the team with a .395 batting average on the year. Power has also been a key, as the Wolves have four of the season's 12 home runs in that span.

Speed and Hitting at the top
One of the keys for the success of the West Georgia Wolves this season has been the play of junior right fielder Tyler Hutch, who is hitting .369 on the year with 13 doubles and 10 stolen bases. But with Hutch setting the table, the Wolves are getting run production in the two, three, and four holes in the lineup, as 28 of the 50 RBI from the team in the past five games have come from Sumner McWhorter, Dalton Rogers and Garrett Hayes. Rogers has two home runs with 11 RBI in that span and Hayes has two homers with eight RBI. McWhorter has just six hits in the past five games, but has nine RBI to his credit from those hits.

Sexton and Norton get Win #6
Jamie Sexton and Matthew Norton both picked up their sixth wins of the season against North Alabama. The two starting pitchers have very similar numbers and they have been a great 1-2 punch for the Wolves starting rotation. Both pitchers are 6-2 and have an ERA under 2.80 while both have pitched over 60 innings. When either Sexton or Norton starts the game for UWG, the team has a record of 16-4 opposed to going 7-7 when someone else starts for the Wolves.
