Wolves suffer first loss in Livingston

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia baseball team lost for the first time in the 2015 Gulf South Conference tournament on Monday afternoon in Livingston, Ala., as the West Alabama Tigers took advantage of defensive miscues late in the game to take a 3-2 victory on the final play of the contest at Tartt Field.

The game was a battle between two undefeated programs looking to advance to championship day unblemished in this year's tourney, and it lived up to that, as the two teams battled throughout the afternoon with neither team giving much of an inch. Top-seed and host West Alabama sent starter Gandy Stubblefield to the mound while head coach Skip Fite sent junior Brandon Goldsmith to represent the No. 3 Wolves on the hill.

The pair dueled for much of the afternoon, with neither giving up much, although the Wolves were the first to strike, opening up with a run in the top of the first inning. In that inning, Artemis Kadkhodaian and Sumner McWhorter delivered on back-to-back singles with one out and the Wolves were in business. In the very next at-bat, McWhorter took off for second and was safe on the play, but the ball got away from the UWA defense, and Kadkhodaian came around to score and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The score remained there as Goldsmith and Stubblefield were locked in a pitcher's duel over the next three innnings. Even in the 5th inning, when the Tigers tied the game with a single run, it didn't come easy. In that inning, only one hit was allowed by the UWG starter, but the damage was done and the two teams went two more innings before West Georgia broke through with a run in the eighth to take a 2-1 advantage. West Alabama was not done yet, as the Tigers scored in the bottom of the 8th on a walk with the bases loaded.

That walk came with one out, keeping the bases loaded in the inning with only one out. Chris Burdette came on in relief and induced a double-play to end the threat and head to the 9th. In that inning, The Wolves were scoreless in the 9th, followed by the final frame in the bottom of the 9th. Adam Chamblee led off the inning with a single, then when Parker Madden attemped a sacriice bunt, the throw went over the head of West Georgia first baseman Dalton Rogers, allowing Chamblee to come all the way around from first to score the winning run.

Burdette was credited with the loss and UWG closer Tanner Rainey picked up the victory. West Georgia will await the winner of the Delta State-Alabama Huntsville game in the afternoon, playing the winner of that contest at 8:00 p.m. this evening.
