UWG Scores Six Goals to Win Third Straight Game

Box Score
Cleveland, MS - It has been a magical past three games for the West Georgia Wolves soccer team, as UWG defeated Delta State by a final score of 6-1 on Friday evening in Cleveland, Miss., giving UWG their third straight win.

In the past three games, UWG has outscored their opponents, Southern Wesleyan, Spring Hill, and, now Delta State, by a combined 17-2. Six different Wolves scored goals on Friday as West Georgia won their third straight game for the first time since 2007.

The Wolves wasted no time in striking first on Friday, as junior forward Susana Abunidz found the back of the net just seven minutes into the contest, giving UWG a 1-0 lead. For Abundiz, it was her third goal of the season. Sophomore Kyla Wright Marshall assisted Abundiz on the goal, picking up her first assist of the season.

In the 25th minute, Wright-Marshall would get in on the scoring herself, as she gave West Georgia a 2-0 advantage with her second goal of the season.

But the Wolves were not comfortable as they would add two more goals before the first period ended.

Katie Mitchell would score her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute, and just under three minutes later, senior Cari Powell struck for the fourth UWG goal of the half, giving the Wolves the 4-0 lead. Senior Cortney Emmert picked up both assists on the goals by Mitchell and Powell.

The second half would start much slower as neither team had much of an advantage before Delta State scored their first goal of the game in the 61st minute. On a four-on-three break, DSU's Tais Cotta capitalized and snuck her shot by Haley Ryan and off the post into the goal, pulling the Statesmen within three.

UWG would have another chance to add to the score in the 75th minute when Susana Abundiz was awarded a penalty kick. Her attempt was saved, however, by DSU's Ravin Hosley.

West Georgia would add two more goals before it was all said and done at Delta Field.

In the 82nd minute, freshman Parker Heissenbuttel connected on a pass from Kara Barber and scored her first career goal, and that gave the Wolves the 5-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Barber would score her second goal of the season on a header. The pass came from Kyla-Wright Marshall, who ended the game with a goal and two assists.

Cortney Emmert would also pick up two assists on the night, with Kara Barber picking up one.

UWG used two goalies on the day as sophomore keeper Katie Miklausich played the first half, making two saves, and keeping the Statesmen scoreless. Haley Ryan played the second half, giving up the one goal, while making six saves.

The win improves West Georgia to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play. UWG is back in action on the road on Sunday afternoon as the Wolves take on Christian Brothers at 1:00 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn.
