Rome, GA - On Sunday afternoon, the West Georgia Wolves got to turn the tables, being on the winning end of a 1-0 game as West Georgia knocked off Shorter on the road thanks in part to
Kelly Geary's goal in the 16th minute.
The win comes on the heels of West Georgia falling in heartbreaking fashion to Lee on Friday night in Carrollton. The shutout is the third of the season for West Georgia and sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Miklausich. No West Georgia team has had three shutouts in a season since the 2012 season. The Wolves had four shutouts that season, finished 6-11-3 and won their first GSC tournament game in school history.
The Wolves began the match on the attack with
Susana Abundiz, testing the Hawks with a shot on goal just three minutes into the contest. The Wolves continued their attack with a shot from
Alexis Lewis that bounced off the post in the 15
th minute.
Shortly after,
Kelly Geary buried it in the back of the net for what would eventually become the game-winner. For Geary, it was her third goal of the season, tying
Cortney Emmert and
Susana Abundiz for the team lead.
Going into halftime, the Wolves led 1-0 against the Hawks and also led in total shots by a 7-4 margin, and 4-3 in shots on goal.
The Wolves began the second half of the match hungry for more. Geary put a shot on frame within the first minute, and the Wolves continued penetrating the Hawks' defense looking for their second goal. The Wolves never got their second goal, but the one goal from Geary was enough as the Wolves defense held strong, allowing just four shots in the second half.
Katie Miklausich was fantastic on the day, making four saves for the Wolves.
The win improves West Georgia to 5-4 overall, including a 3-2 mark in GSC play.
The Wolves return home to University Field this Friday, October 2 against Mississippi College. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Carrollton.
