Wolves shut out Lions in Season Opener

Box Score
Franklin Springs, GA - Defense ruled the night for the Wolves on opening night for the UWG soccer team, but a goal in the 61st minute gave the Wolves a 1-0 win over the Emmanuel Lions on Thursday night in Franklin Springs, Ga.

Solid defense and a three save performance from sophomore goalkeeper Katie Miklausich gave the Wolves the shutout win. The nshutout was the first for UWG since September 13, 2013 when Mary Laza saved a penalty kick to preserve a 1-0 win over Alabama Huntsville.

Offensively, the Wolves got the game-winning goal from true freshman Susana Abundiz, but had plenty of other opportunities as UWG had 18 shots on the night, compared to just five by the Lions. Alexis Lewis had five shots on goal, including one that rattled off the post. Freshman Rachel Lane also had five shots, and put three on frame.

Abundiz's goal came in the 61st minute as the El Paso, Texas native floated a shot over the Emmanuel keeper for her first goal in the red and blue of West Georgia, and gave the Wolves a lead they would not lose. The win puts the Wolves at 1-0 on the year as they prepare for Saturday's game against Limestone.

Kickoff for Saturday's game against Limestone is set for 3:30 p.m. from Gaffney, SC.
