Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Wolves baseball team welcomes the Alabama Huntsville Chargers for a Gulf South Conference series this weekend. The Wolves enter the contest with a record of 8-2, with a 1-2 record in conference. The Chargers enter the game at 9-4 overall, 3-0 in the GSC.
Wolves Last Weekend
It was an up and down weekend for the Wolves in Florence, Ala. as they dropped two out of three games to the North Alabama Lions. The Wolves won big in game one as they defeated the Lions 13-1.
Tyler Hutch and
Caleb Lopes each had three hits for the Wolves, and
Payton Mann and
Dalton Rogers each had three RBIs.
Brandon Goldsmith threw seven innings giving up only one earned run.
Game two was a pitching duel as neither team scored through the first four innings. The Wolves picked up single runs in the fifth and sixth inning off of RBI hits by
Ben Utley. The Wolves sputtered in the seventh inning as they gave up three runs to lose 3-2 in walk off fashion on a Kevin Hall homerun. Utley led the Wolves going 2-2 with two RBIs.
Colton Duttweiler threw 4.1 innings giving up no runs on three hits.
Game three was another exciting game between UWG and UNA. The Wolves scored early gaining a run the top of the first on a
Caleb Lopes single. The Wolves pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third when
Garrett Hayes hit a double to score two more runs.
The Wolves had the lead 4-1 heading to the eighth inning when the UNA bats came alive. The Lions scored three runs in the eighth on two homeruns, which pushed the game to the ninth even at 4-4. Both teams were silent offensively in the ninth and tenth before an eleventh inning single gave the Lions another walk off win, 5-4.
Chase Waters was 2-4 and
Garrett Hayes added a hit and two RBIs.
UAH at a Glance
The Chargers enter this weekend on a five-game winning streak, including a sweep of the Lee Flames. The Chargers are third in the GSC with a team batting average of .330, led by Justin Cantrell and Trey Mathis who are hitting .500 and .452, respectively. UAH has a team ERA of 4.68. Taylor Clemons has pitched 12.1 innings and given up no runs, while recording two saves. The Chargers are coached by Hunter Royer.
When and Where
The Wolves and the Chargers are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday, February 27 and a single game on Sunday, February 28. The doubleheader is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Cole Field with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Game three will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
