Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team continued Gulf South Conference play on Saturday afternoon as they split a pair of games against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers at Cole Field. The Wolves dropped game one by a score of 6-4, but responded well in game two with an 11-2 win. West Georgia is now 9-3 on the year with a 2-3 record in conference.
Game One
The Wolves got off to a quick start in game one scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Tyler Hutch walked and
Artemis Kadkhodaian was hit by a pitch before
Caleb Lopes put down a sacrifice bunt. An errant throw by the Chargers allowed Lopes to advance to second while Hutch and Kadkhodaian scored.
UWG scored two more runs in the second inning on an RBI double by
Tyler Hutch and a
Caleb Lopes RBI single.
Brandon Goldsmith was also dominant through the first three innings, striking out eight batters through the three innings.
The Chargers found the scoreboard in the fourth on an RBI single from Wright Hackett. As West Georgia's bats went cold, UAH proceeded to tie the game on three runs in the sixth. They scored the three runs on four hits in the inning.
The score stayed tied at 4-4 until UAH scored two runs on a double by AJ Walden. The Chargers scored both runs with two outs in the inning. The Wolves were unable to tie the game in the ninth, but did get runners at second and third base.
Tyler Hutch had a hit, RBI and scored two runs in the game.
Caleb Lopes was 2-3 with an RBI.
TJ Watson threw 3.1 innings for West Georgia, giving up two runs.
Brandon Goldsmith had 12 strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
Game Two
Game two started out similarly for West Georgia as they plated two runs in the first inning.
Dalton Rogers got an RBI as he grounded out to second, scoring
Chase Waters who had reached on an error and advanced to second on
Caleb Lopes' walk and to third on a passed ball.
Keith Buckhault then doubled, scoring Lopes. That tied the game at 2-2, as UAH scored two runs in the top of the first.
Ben Utley started the fourth with a single for the Wolves. He got forced out at second on a
Tyler Hutch groundball. Hutch then stole second.
Chase Waters walked, followed by he and Hutch advancing a base on a wild pitch. Hutch and Waters then both scored on a throwing error by UAH.
Dalton Rogers ripped an RBI triple, and
Keith Buckhault drove him in for the fourth run of the inning.
UWG picked up for more runs in the third as
Artemis Kadkhodaian hit a solo homerun to left field. With two outs,
Tyler Hutch ripped a double and
Chase Waters was hit by a pitch, setting up a three-run bomb by
Caleb Lopes. That made the game 10-2 heading to the fourth inning.
The Wolves picked up a single run in fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Caleb Lopes that plated
Tyler Hutch, ending the scoring for the game.
Colton Duttweiler got the win, throwing 5.0 innings, while giving up two runs.
Josh Morgan and
Tyler Gunnin closed the game as each pitched one scoreless inning, combining for three strikeouts.
Tyler Hutch was 1-4 on the game, scoring three runs.
Caleb Lopes also had a hit and drove in four runs.
Keith Buckhault had two hits and two RBIs, while
Artemis Kadkhodaian drove in a run on two hits.
