Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Wolves baseball team welcomes the Delta State Statesmen to Cole Field this weekend for a three game Gulf South Conference series. The Wolves enter the contest at 12-5 overall and 4-5 in the conference. Delta State is 12-7 on the year, including a 6-3 record in the GSC.
Wolves Last Game
West Georgia has won three of their last four games, including a 9-0 win over the Paine Lions on Tuesday at Cole Field. The Wolves out-hit the Lions by an 8-3 margin. The scoring began early for the Wolves as
Chase Waters led off with a walk and stole second. With two outs
Garrett Hayes stayed hot with a single that scored Waters for the first run of the game.
The UWG bats stayed hot in the second as
John Gaiter walked followed by back-to-back doubles from
Jake Wilkinson and
Cody Short to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead. West Georgia added another run as
Caleb Lopes reached on an error, allowing
Cody Short to score.
The score would hold at 4-0 until the eighth inning when UWG exploded for five runs. The inning once again began with a
John Gaiter walk. That was followed by a walk by
Artemis Kadkhodaian and a hit-by-pitch from
Tyler Hutch, loading the bases for the Wolves.
Drew Eady reached on a fielder's choice, pushing a run across and making the score 5-0.
Cade Marlowe and
Caleb Lopes then hit back-to-back doubles pushing three more UWG runs across the plate. The scoring ended with a
Garrett Hayes single that scored
Caleb Lopes.
Garrett Hayes went 3-4 for the Wolves, including two RBIs.
Cade Marlowe had a hit and two RBIs as well. The Wolves had four doubles on the game.
Turner Edwards got the win pitching six shutdown innings, allowing just one run and striking out eight.
Joe Vonderschmidt,
Mitchell Mannino, and
Ryan Sapp threw the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, giving up only two hits and striking out six batters combined.
Delta State at a Glance
The Statesmen enter the contest with a 12-7 record. DSU is second in the Gulf South Conference with a .350 team batting average. Delta has six player hit above .330, led by senior Will Robertson who is fifth in the GSC with a .444 BA. They also are seventh in the conference in team ERA at 4.39. Tre Hobbs is the ace of the staff, as he leads the GSC with a 5-0 record, and comes in at fourth in the conference with a 1.62 ERA. DSU is coming off of a 5-1 win against William Carey on Wednesday evening.
When and Where
The Wolves and the Statesmen will have a doubleheader beginning on Friday at 1:00 p.m. EST at Cole Field. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
