Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Wolves baseball team picked up two huge GSC victories against the Delta State Statesmen on Friday afternoon at Cole Field. The two victories move West Georgia to 14-5 on the year and 6-5 in conference. Delta State falls to 12-9 on the year, with a 6-5 record in conference.
Game One
The Wolves started game one as good as possible scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. It started with a single by
Tyler Hutch, but a double play left the bases empty with two outs. That's when
Caleb Lopes crushed his fourth homerun of the year to open up the scoring.
Garrett Hayes then singled and advanced to second on a pass ball to set up an RBI single form
Dalton Rogers.
Artemis Kadkhodaian then crushed a homerun to left field to make the game 4-0 at the end of the first inning.
The bottom of the third inning began with a single by
Artemis Kadkhodaian.
Drew Eady then successfully executed a sacrifice bunt to move Kadkhodaian into scoring position with two outs.
Ben Utley then singled to score Kadkhodaian and make it a 5-0 lead at the end of the third.
Delta State picked up single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, to make the game 5-2 headed to the bottom of the eighth.
Drew Eady then reached on an error to begin the home half of the inning. Eady advanced to second on a fielder's choice and then scored on a triple by
Payton Mann. With two outs pinch-hitter
Cade Marlowe hit an infield single to score Mann.
Caleb Lopes walked, followed by a
Garrett Hayes single that pushed the final UWG run across the plate, ending the scoring at 8-2.
Brandon Goldsmith was lights out for West Georgia, throwing eight innings and giving up only two runs while scattering eight Statesmen hits.
Tyler Gunnin gave up no hits while pitching the ninth.
Artemis Kadkhodaian was 3-4 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Caleb Lopes,
Garrett Hayes, and
Payton Mann each had two hits, and RBI, and a run scored.
Game Two
The second game of the day was a thriller as the Wolves pulled out a 4-3 win in eight innings. Delta State scored first, putting up two runs in the top of the second inning. The Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Payton Mann hit a homerun to left field to cut the lead to 2-1. With two outs
Ben Utley doubled, followed by a
Caleb Lopes single that tied the game at 2-2.
The scoring was silent until the eighth when Delta State pushed a run across to make it a 3-2 game headed to the bottom of the inning.
Keith Buckhault then pinch-hit and hit a single to start the inning.
Chase Waters pinch hit and moved to third base on a
Payton Mann double.
Tyler Hutch was intentionally walked, setting up a game tying sacrifice fly by
Ben Utley.
Caleb Lopes then finished the game with a hit to right field, scoring
Payton Mann for the 4-3 walk off victory.
Lopes was 2-4 on the game with two RBIs.
Payton Mann was 2-3 with a homerun, and RBI, and two runs scored.
Colton Duttweiler threw four innings, giving up two runs. Tritt Fennel threw two scoreless innings, striking out one.
Matthew Norton got the win, throwing two innings and giving up one run.
