Carrollton, GA - West Georgia was unable to complete the sweep of the Delta State Statesmen on Saturday afternoon as the Wolves fell 6-3 in game three of the series. The loss gives UWG a 14-6 overall record, with a 6-6 record in the Gulf South Conference.
It was not the start West Georgia had hoped for as Delta State scored a single run in the first and second innings, followed by three runs in the third to take an early 5-0 lead over the Wolves. UWG pulled within three as
Ben Utley homered in the third and
Drew Eady singled in a run to make it a 5-2 game.
Pitcher
Josh Morgan was outstanding in relief, throwing 3.2 innings, giving up no runs and striking out two. West Georgia added another run in the fifth when
Garrett Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to cut the DSU lead to two.
Mitchell Mannino entered the game for the Wolves with bases loaded and no one out in the top of the seventh, but he shut the door striking out two batters and getting the third to pop out to first base.
Delta State was able to add another run in eighth, which would end the scoring for the day at 6-3 in favor of the Statesmen.
Drew Eady was 2-4 on the day with an RBI.
Ben Utley hit his first homerun of the year in the third inning of the game.
Tyler Hutch,
Payton Mann, and
Caleb Lopes each had one hit in the game. Lopes has now had a hit in each of the 20 games the Wolves have played this season.
West Georgia looks to get back in the win column this Wednesday, as they will host the North Georgia Nighthawks in a midweek game at Cole Field. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. EST. Live stats will be available on uwgsports.com. Updates will be available via @UWGAthletics on Twitter.
