Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Wolves split a GSC doubleheader with the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday in Pensacola, FL. The Wolves were able to pull away to win game one, but their comeback effort fell short in game two. The Wolves moved to 7-7 in conference after the doubleheader.
Game One
The Wolves scored early in game one, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Tyler Hutch and
Ben Utley hit back-to-back singles to begin the game.
Caleb Lopes then doubled, scoring Hutch in the process.
Dalton Rogers singled to bring in Lopes and give the Wolves the 3-0 lead.
The Argonauts scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 3-2 game.
Caleb Lopes walked in the third inning. With two outs,
Dalton Rogers and
Artemis Kadkhodaian each singled to load the bases.
Drew Eady then singled, driving in Lopes to make it a 4-2 UWG advantage.
The Argonauts scored in the fourth on a solo homerun to cut the deficit back to 4-3. The Wolves responded in the fifth, beginning with back-to-back singles from
Caleb Lopes and
Garrett Hayes. Lopes moved to third on a throwing error.
Dalton Rogers then singled, driving in Lopes for a 5-3 UWG lead.
In the top of the sixth
Payton Mann walked and
Tyler Hutch reached on an error to give the Wolves two on with one out.
Ben Utley then singled, driving in Mann.
Caleb Lopes then drove in Hutch on his third hit of the game to give the Wolves a 7-3 lead in the sixth inning.
Artemis Kadkhodaian stayed on his power surge in the seventh, blasting his third homerun in the past two games to give UWG an 8-3 lead. That ended the scoring giving the Wolves an 8-3 win.
Brandon Goldsmith got the win, throwing 6.1 innings, striking out four.
Matthew Norton threw 2.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out four.
Caleb Lopes was 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. The Wolves had 14 hits as a team.
Game Two
The first two innings of game two saw a lot of base runners but no score, as both pitchers were able to pitch out of jams. The Wolves scored first in the third inning.
Tyler Hutch double and was moved over by a
Ben Utley sacrifice fly.
Caleb Lopes then drove him in on a sacrifice fly.
West Florida responded in the bottom of the third with a run of their own, making it a 1-1 game headed to the fourth. The Argonauts then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. They added with two more runs in the fifth to make the lead 4-1.
The Wolves had a two-out rally in the sixth as
Artemis Kadkhodaian singled to start the rally.
Garrett Hayes then reached on an error, followed by an RBI single from
Drew Eady.
Walker Borneman then ripped a pinch-hit single to score Hayes, making it a 4-3 game in the sixth inning.
UWF once again responded by two more runs, making the lead 6-3 headed to the final inning. West Georgia added two runs in the seventh, but fell 6-5 in game two.
Tyler Hutch was 2-4 with two runs scored.
