Carrollton, GA - Despite falling down five runs in the first two innings, the UWG Wolves baseball team battled back to win game one of this weekend's three-game series over the Mississippi College Choctaws 12-10 on Friday evening at Cole Field.
Not only did the Wolves come back from a five run deficit after the first two innings, UWG trailed in the bottom of the ninth before a five spot in the inning gave the Wolves lead for good.
The Choctaws got off to the best start possible, hitting the first pitch of the game from
Brandon Goldsmith over the fence. MC used four runs and three hits including two homers in the first to build a big, 4-0 lead. MC added a run in the second on three hits.
UWG scored two runs in the second to cut the gap and slowly began chipping away at the lead.
In the fourth, the Wolves used a leadoff single by
Chase Waters and a Choctaw error to score two.
Matthew Pope and
Garrett Hayes picked up the RBI, cutting the lead to just 5-4.
The Wolves got two more in the fifth after
Dalton Rogers and
Artemis Kadkhodaian led off with a pair hit by pitches.
Cade Marlowe drove in Rogers from second while
Chase Waters drove in Kadkhodaian, to take the lead.
Dalton Rogers drove in a run in the sixth on a double, scoring
Caleb Lopes from first base.
Mississippi College added three runs in the top of the eighth inning, yet again using two long balls in one inning to strike and take a lead.
The Wolves, however, struck for five in the inning with
Artemis Kadkhodaian driving in the game winner on a two RBI single.
Chase Waters and
Ben Utley drove in a combined three insurance runs in the inning.
Tyler Gunnin pitched a perfect ninth, slamming the door on the Choctaws.
Senior
Brandon Goldsmith pitched six innings on the day, giving up five and striking out six.
Mitchell Mannino, however, got the win for the Wolves.
Every starter for UWG got a hit with
Ben Utley and
Matthew Pope each getting three each. Kadkhodaian, Waters, and Utley each drove in a pair of runs on the day. The Wolves had just one extra base hit on the day, a double by
Dalton Rogers.
The Wolves move to 17-9 on the year and 8-8 in GSC play. The Wolves and Choctaws are back at it tomorrow afternoon in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Cole Field.
