Carrollton, GA - It was a tale of two games for the Wolves baseball squad on Saturday as the Wolves split the doubleheader with Mississippi College, falling in game one 6-1, and then winning the series on a 12-9 victory in game three.
Game One
West Georgia got just one run in the first game of the day, and only six hits total, with five of those coming from
Tyler Hutch and
Matthew Pope combined. To make matters worse, the Wolves dug themselves a hole, trailing 5-0 after three innings of baseball.
Tritt Fennell got the start, giving up four runs total, three earned, on three hits and four walks. Senior
Matthew Norton pitched well in relief, going 6.2 innings and giving up two runs on six hits while striking out four.
The Wolves got their lone run of the game in the eighth inning, after back-to-back hits from Pope and Hutch. Pope scored the run as
Caleb Lopes reached on a fielder's choice.
Game Two
There were plenty of runs in the second game of the afternoon as UWG scored 12 runs, but only had six hits on the day.
Again, the UWG starter got into early trouble as in this game,
Colton Duttweiler faced four batters, walking two, and hitting two to push an early run across. The Choctaws got another run in the inning, taking a 2-0 lead before UWG ever got the bat in their hands.
Tyler Hutch scored the first run of the game for UWG, scoring on a groundout by
Caleb Lopes.
After a two spot for MC in the second, UWG responded by tying the game with three runs in their half of the inning, aided by a Choctaw error.
Ben Utley and
Walker Borneman each picked up an RBI in the frame.
After both teams were scoreless in the third inning, the squads combined for nine in the fourth inning, with six of those from UWG.
Artemis Kadkhodaian led off with a single and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Khadkhodaian then scored on another MC error. After the Wolves loaded the bases, Borneman took one off the elbow, followed by the same from
Tyler Hutch, each earning an RBI.
Caleb Lopes drove in the fourth UWG run of the inning on a sac fly before
Artemis Kadkhodaian drove in two with a single.
West Georgia added two more in the fifth with Borneman and Lopes picking up RBI. MC scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh, and loaded the bases in their last at bat, but
Mitchell Mannino closed the door, earning his first save of the year.
Borneman and Lopes each had three RBI on the day while Kadkhodaian had a pair himself.
