Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves baseball team completed the season sweep of the Emmanuel College Lions with an 8-5 win on Tuesday evening in Franklin Springs, GA. The Wolves defeated the Lions 17-0 in the first game of the season for either team. The win gives West Georgia a 19-10 overall record on the 2016 season.
The Wolves were the first to score on in the game as
Tyler Hutch lead off with his team-leading seventh homerun of the year. West Georgia would never surrender the lead for the duration of the game. In the top of the third,
Dalton Rogers doubled down the right field line, scoring
Caleb Lopes in the process and giving UWG a 2-0 lead.
The Wolves added to their lead in the top of the fourth
Garrett Hayes drove in
Tyler Hutch and
Payton Mann for two more UWG runs. Emmanuel responded in the bottom of the inning as a double drove in three Emmanuel runs, making it a 4-3 UWG lead headed to the fifth inning.
West Georgia responded in the top of the fifth as reigning GSC freshman of the week
Cade Marlowe singled to left field, driving in
Dalton Rogers for a 5-3 lead. In the top of the eighth
Payton Mann hit an infield single, scoring
Chase Waters.
Garrett Hayes then drove in
Ben Utley to give West Georgia a 7-3 lead.
Emmanuel scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but
Chase Waters singled and scored
Dalton Rogers in the top of the ninth to finish the scoring with a 8-5 advantage for West Georgia.
Garrett Hayes finished the game 2-5 with three RBI.
Cade Marlowe also had two hits and an RBI.
Tyler Hutch and
Dalton Rogers each scored two runs for the Wolves.
Colton Duttweiler got the win for West Georgia, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up three runs. Tritt Fennell threw 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
Dalton Reagin gave up only two runs in his two innings that he pitched, while
Mitchell Mannino gave up no hits in his one inning pitched.
West Georgia now prepares for another important GSC series, as they will welcome the Shorter Hawks to Cole Field for a three-game set. Game one is set for 2:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, April 2. Game two will take place approximately 30 minutes after game one. Game three will be Sunday with another 2:00 p.m. EST first pitch. Live stats will be available on uwgsports.com.
