Cleveland, TN - The sweep was not meant to be for the UWG baseball team as the Wolves fell in a 10-7 game to the Lee Flames on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Tenn.
West Georgia started things off in the first inning with a leadoff single by
Tyler Hutch who would score on a RBI single by
Garrett Hayes.
Ben Utley, who reached on a walk would then come around to score on an
Artemis Kadkhodaian sac fly, giving UWG a 2-0 lead before the Flames got to the plate.
Brandon Goldsmith got the ball for head coach
Skip Fite and pitched 6.1 inning on the day. The Flames got three runs off of Goldsmith in the second inning after back-to-back singles to lead off the second. After an error, a double would clear the bases scoring three for the Flames.
The Wolves got two runs back in the fifth inning with a two outs. The rally would start with a
Dalton Rogers single and three batters later
Drew Eady would draw a walk that scored a run with the bases loaded.
Payton Mann would drive in the other run in that inning.
Rogers drove in a run for West Georgia in the sixth inning, giving the Wolves a 5-3 lead. The Flames hit a homerun in each the sixth and seventh innings, scoring three runs total, reclaiming the lead for Lee.
Caleb Lopes used a long ball of his own to get the lead back for West Georgia, driving in two runs for the Wolves, putting UWG up 7-6 in the eighth inning.
The homerun trend would continue as the Flames added the final blow of the game, a three-run walkoff homer in the ninth by Ben Holland, giving the Flames a 10-7 win.
Hayes and Rogers each had multiple hits on the day with Hayes going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a double. Lopes hit the only homerun for West Georgia, and finished the day 1-for-5 at the plate.
West Georgia wins the series after sweeping the Saturday double-header and now sit at 4-5 in GSC play on the year. The Wolves go out of conference for a midweek game against Paine on Tuesday. First pitch from Cole Field on Tuesday is set for 3 p.m.
