Carrollton, GA - It was a much needed midweek win for the UWG Wolves baseball team as they knocked off Paine 9-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Cole Field.
The Wolves, who lost on a walk-off homer on Sunday afternoon, were able to get the taste out of their mouth as they dominated Paine, moving to 12-5 on the year.
West Georgia wasted no time as they scored a run in their first time at the plate, as
Garrett Hayes singled in a run in the bottom of the first, giving UWG the early lead.
After a three spot in the second by UWG, courtesy of a
Cody Short double and a throwing error by the Lions, the bats would go silent for both teams for the next five innings.
Turner Edwards got the start for head coach
Skip Fite, pitching six innings giving up no runs on one hit while striking out eight. Edwards lowered his ERA to 1.35 and earned his first win of the season and his UWG career.
In the eighth inning, West Georgia would add five runs, blowing the game wide open. After the Wolves loaded the bases by drawing two walks and a hit batsmen,
Drew Eady drove in a run on a fielder's choice, scoring the fifth run of the day for West Georgia.
Cade Marlowe and
Caleb Lopes would then hit back-to-back doubles, scoring two, followed by a RBI single by Hayes which scored Lopes.
Ryan Sapp pitched a solid ninth inning, giving up just one hit, but sealed the win for the Wolves.
Hayes continued from his red hot weekend, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Cade Marlowe was 1-for-2, coming in late as a pinch hitter, but had the big two RBI double in the eighth.
Cody Short, who got the start in right field was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI on the day.
West Georgia welcomes Delta State to Carrollton this weekend, hosting the Statesmen for a three-game series. The schedule is currently set for a Saturday doubleheader and a Sunday single game, but is likely to shift with rain in the forecast on Sunday.
