Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves baseball team completed the sweep of the Christian Brothers Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon in a 12-2 win in Memphis, TN. For the Wolves (26-10, 15-9 Gulf South Conference) that was their ninth straight victory. The win also maintains their two game lead for the sixth spot in the GSC and a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament.
How it Happened
The Wolves got off to another hot start as
Cade Marlowe doubled in his first at bat.
Caleb Lopes was hit by a pitch and
Cade Marlowe stole third. Marlowe then scored on a double steal by he and Lopes. Lopes was then able to score on an error by CBU.
Garrett Hayes then crushed a homerun to give the Wolves a 4-0 lead.
The score stayed steady until the fourth inning as
Garrett Hayes began the inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt from
Drew Eady,
Keith Buckhault singled to drive in Hayes. That gave West Georgia a 5-0 lead after four innings.
With two outs in the top of fifth
Caleb Lopes walked and
Dalton Rogers singled.
Tyler Hutch then walked to load the bases for
Garrett Hayes who doubled in three UWG runs. That gave West Georgia an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning. Hayes at this point had five RBI on two doubles and a homerun.
The Buccaneers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-2. West Georgia began the top of the seventh with a
Cade Marlowe walk,
Caleb Lopes single, and
Dalton Rogers walk. With one out,
Garrett Hayes walked to force in a run, making it a 9-2 lead. That was Hayes sixth RBI of the game.
In the eighth inning
Jake Wilkinson pitch-hit and singled to start the inning.
Cade Marlowe walked and
Caleb Lopes was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Jake Wilkinson then scored on a wild pitch to give West Georgia a 10-2 lead.
Jake Wilkinson added a two-RBI single in the ninth to finish the scoring at 12-2.
Turner Edwards picked up the win, pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Garrett Hayes finished 3-4 with two doubles, a homerun, and six RBI.
Jake Wilkinson was 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Cade Marlowe,
Caleb Lopes, and
Dalton Rogers each scored two runs.
