Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves baseball team picked up two huge wins on Saturday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader against the Valdosta State Blazers in Gulf South Conference action. The Wolves (29-10, 17-9 GSC) won game one by a score of 4-3 before taking game two by a score of 5-1.
Game One
It was a great start in game one for UWG as the Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Cade Marlowe singled to left followed by a walk by
Caleb Lopes.
Tyler Hutch then singled to left field to score Marlowe and give UWG a 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the fourth inning when the Blazers scored to runs to grab a 2-1 lead. UWG showed a great deal of resiliency in the bottom of the inning as they scored a run of their own. With two outs,
Payton Mann and
Artemis Kadkhodaian hit back-to-back singles to give the Wolves two on and two out.
Cade Marlowe then singled and tied the game at 2-2.
Valdosta State scored a single run in the fifth, but UWG once again responded with two runs and took the lead 4-3.
Caleb Lopes doubled and
Dalton Rogers singled to put runners on first and third. Garret Hayes doubled to score a UWG run and tie the game at three. With the bases loaded and one out a wild pitch allowed
Dalton Rogers to score and give the Wolves the lead. That ended the scoring in the game at 4-3 UWG.
The Wolves had 12 hits, led by
Cade Marlowe who went 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Artemis Kadkhodaian and
Dalton Rogers each had two hits.
Brandon Goldsmith moved to 8-0 on the year, giving up three runs over 6.2 innings pitched.
Game Two
Game two was another great win for UWG as West Georgia won the game 5-1. There was no score until the third inning when Valdosta State score an unearned run. UWG once again responded as they scored two runs in the bottom of the third.
Payton Mann doubled with one out to get the rally going for the Wolves.
Artemis Kadkhodaian then singled, before
Cade Marlowe doubled in both runs to give West Georgia a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves scored a single run in the fourth when
Garrett Hayes walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by
Ben Utley. The Wolves completed the scoring in the sixth as they scored two insurance runs to make the score 5-1.
Tyler Hutch scored on a single by
Drew Eady, and Eady then scored on a single from
Ben Utley.
Cade Marlowe went 2-3 with two more RBI.
Ben Utley also had two hits and two RBI in the game.
Matthew Norton was outstanding in the game. He threw all seven innings, giving up only two hits and one unearned run. He struck out five. He is now 5-1 on the season.
