CARROLLTON, GA - The UWG baseball team swept a Friday doubleheader at Cole Field against the Union Bulldogs and clinched their spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament in the process. UWG won game one 8-5 before taking an 8-0 decision in game two.
Game One
The game started out well for the Wolves as they picked up a run in the first inning on a single by
Garrett Hayes. The scored stayed at 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Union scored two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The score remained at 2-1 until the top of the seventh inning, as Union added two more runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Wolves responded in the bottom of the inning as
Ben Utley singled to start the inning off.
Payton Mann was then hit by a pitch to put two on and no one out. A single from
Cade Marlowe scored Utley and cut the Bulldog lead to 4-2.
The bottom of the eighth inning began well for West Georgia as
Tyler Hutch walked, followed by singles from
Garrett Hayes and
Drew Eady to load the bases.
Tyler Hutch and
Garrett Hayes then scored on an error by Union to make it a 4-4 game.
Payton Mann then gave UWG the lead with an RBI single to left.
Cade Marlowe followed with another RBI hit, scoring Mann and Utley. The final UWG run came on a sacrifice fly from
Caleb Lopes to give the Wolves an 8-4 lead headed to the ninth.
Union added a run in the ninth, but the Wolves finished the game with an 8-5 win.
Matthew Norton started for the Wolves, throwing 6.2 innings while giving up one earned run and striking out two.
Dalton Reagin pitched in relief and picked up the win.
Cade Marlowe finished the game 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Garrett Hayes added two hits, and RBI, and a run scored.
Ben Utley also had two runs scored.
Game Two
Brandon Goldsmith got the nod on the bump for the Wolves in game two, pitching a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.
Goldsmith had plenty of run support and got an early lead as West Georgia struck first as
Caleb Lopes scored the first run on a
Dalton Rogers double in the first inning.
West Georgia went scoreless in the second and third, but up a three spot in the fourth inning after leadoff singles by
Tyler Hutch and
Garrett Hayes. After Hutch went first to third on Hayes' single, he then scored on a safety squeeze by
Drew Eady.
Ben Utley then singled home Hayes and Eady scored on another safety squeeze by
Payton Mann.
The Wolves got another run in the fifth
Drew Eady singled following a Hayes double, scoring Hayes for the fifth run of the game.
In the bottom half of the next inning, the Wolves loaded the bases and then scored three runs when
Caleb Lopes hit a bases clearing double to the right center gap, putting the game at 8-0, which is how it would end.
Lopes was l-for-2 at the plate with three RBI while
Cade Marlowe,
Dalton Rogers, and
Garrett Hayes each had two hits in game two.

The Wolves and Bulldogs close out the regular season tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch in game three of the series. Senior Day activities will take place before first pitch at approximately 12:45 p.m.
