Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves baseball team completed a big sweep of the Shorter Hawks on Sunday, defeating the Hawks by a score of 5-3. The win moves the UWG record to 22-10 overall and 12-9 in the Gulf South Conference. That allows the Wolves to stay in sixth in the conference standings. The Wolves have now won five straight games and six of their last seven.
How It Happened
Shorter scored first in the game as a walk turned in to a run for the Hawks. West Georgia responded in the bottom of the first as
Artemis Kadkhodaian was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on an RBI single from
Dalton Rogers. For Rogers that was his team-leading 31 RBI of the year.
The Hawks were able to pick up two runs in the top of the third inning when Raul Cortes hit a two-run homer. West Georgia once again responded as they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. One run scored on a wild pitch and the other scored on a ball hit by
Chase Waters.
The bottom of the fifth inning would end the scoring for either team as
Caleb Lopes hit his fifth homerun of the season in the form of a two-run shot to left field. That gave Lopes his 29 and 30 RBI of the season, but more importantly it gave UWG a 5-3 lead.
Josh Morgan was excellent in relief as he threw 4.3 innings, giving up no runs and three hits while striking out five. He moves to 3-0 on the season after picking up the win.
Mitchell Mannino picked up his third save of the year, throwing 2.1 innings and giving up only one hit while striking out three.
Caleb lopes had a hit, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Wolves.
Artemis Kadkhodaian also had a hit and scored two runs in the ballgame.
Dalton Rogers and
Cade Marlowe each added a hit.

The Wolves now head on the road for a four game road trip. They will play at Georgia Southwestern this Wednesday before taking on Christian Brothers next weekend in a road GSC series. This Wednesday's game is set for a 5:00 p.m. EST start in Americus, GA.
