Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves look to keep their winning streak alive as they travel to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday to take on the Hurricanes in a midweek matchup. The Wolves enter the game at 22-10 overall after winning six of their last seven games. West Georgia is currently sixth in the Gulf South Conference standings with a record of 12-9 on the year.
Wolves Last Weekend
UWG is coming off of an impressive three game sweep of the Shorter Hawks this past weekend. The three game sweep of the Hawks gave West Georgia a two-game advantage over Lee, who is battling West Georgia for the sixth seed in the GSC and a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament.
Game one for the Wolves was a masterpiece by UWG standout
Brandon Goldsmith. The senior right-hander threw six innings, giving up only five hits and one earned run. Goldsmith is now 6-0 on the year and fifth in the Gulf South Conference with a 2.98 ERA.
Turner Edwards was also great in relief, pitching three innings of one-hit baseball.
Artemis Kadkhodaian led the offense with two hits and two RBI. UWG won that game 5-1.
Game two was another gem for a UWG starting pitcher as
Matthew Norton threw all seven innings of the game. Norton gave up only six hits in the game and the only run given up was unearned. He struck out five batters and threw only 82 pitches in the contest. That moved the senior to 3-1 on the year and dropped his ERA to 3.40, which is eighth in the GSC.
Payton Mann and
Cade Marlowe each had two hits for West Georgia.
Tyler Hutch and
Chase Waters led the team with two RBI each.
Artemis Kadkhodaian and
Dalton Rogers each scored two runs in the second game of the series to take the win 9-1.
West Georgia used great relief pitching and timely hitting to pick up a 5-3 win to complete the sweep of Shorter.
Josh Morgan was brilliant as he threw 4.2 innings in relief, giving up only three hits while striking out five.
Mitchell Mannino got the save as he threw 2.1 innings, giving up a single hit and striking out three.
Caleb Lopes led the offense with a homerun that produced two RBI. He also scored two runs.
Georgia Southwestern at a Glance
Georgia Southwestern is currently 17-19 on the year with a 3-18 record in the Peach Belt Conference. The Hurricanes are hitting .283 as a team. They are led by Zach Barron who is hitting .336 on the year with a team-high five homeruns. Alex Kranick is hitting .289 on the year. He leads the team with 36 RBI on the season.
Georgia Southwestern has a team ERA of 5.51 on the year. They have allowed 21 homeruns to opponents in the 2016 season. Bryan McLain is in his twelfth season as the Hurricanes head coach.
