AMERICUS, GA - It was an offensive explosion on Wednesday evening in South Georgia as the West Georgia Wolves baseball team took down the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes 14-4 at Hurricane Stadium in Americus, Ga.
Garrett Hayes headlined the stat sheet, going 4-for-4 on the day with six RBI while
Dalton Rogers drove in four on the night. As a team, the Wolves had 13 hits including four doubles.
Tritt Fennell picked up the win for West Georgia, earning his third of the year while Mitch Holloway was given the loss for Georgia Southwestern (18-20, 3-18 Peach Belt)
How it Happened
West Georgia (23-10, 12-9 Gulf South) wasted no time in giving the UWG starter,
Ryan Sapp some run support as the Wolves got three runs in their first at bat.
Artemis Kadkhodaian led off the game by being hit by a pitch and then moved to third on a
Caleb Lopes double.
Dalton Rogers then singled home those two to put the Wolves up. Hayes then singled home Rogers who had taken second on a throw to home.
Sapp, who was making his ninth appearance, but first start of the year, pitched a relatively trouble-free first inning before giving up an earned run in the second. GSW had four hits in the frame, but only scored one, thanks in large part to
Keith Buckhault gunning down a runner at the plate on a ground ball.
Again, the Wolves added three runs in the third inning.
Dalton Rogers and
Tyler Hutch would earn back-to-back walks and scored on a single and an error by the GSW right fielder that would also bring Hayes all the way around to score.
In the fourth, the Wolves added four on three straight hits. After GSW loaded the bases with three straight walks, UWG knocked in four runs on three straight hits by Rogers, Hutch, and Hayes.
Ethan Hunter came on to pitch in the fourth as the Canes added an unearned run. Hunter would then walk two straight and head coach
Skip Fite would bring in Tritt Fennell who used five pitches to give out of the bases loaded, two out jam.
After a scoreless frame for UWG in the fifth, Georgia Southwestern added their fourth run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Evan Alderman.
West Georgia added four in the seventh inning as
Cade Marlowe scored on a sac fly by
Dalton Rogers.
Garrett Hayes then ripped a double and drove in Lopes.
Keith Buckhault then reached on an error and scored Hayes. Buckhault scored the final run of the frame on a
Payton Mann single to left center.
Tyler Gunnin then came in to pitch the seventh inning, closing the door on the Canes, and ending the game in a run-rule.
