TAMPA, FL - What started as a pitcher's duel quickly got out of hand for the Wolves as they dropped the opening game of the NCAA South Regional to Nova Southeastern by a count of 11-4 on the campus of University of Tampa in Tampa, Fla.
The scoring started in the third inning when the Sharks got a run using some small ball. Two singles with a sac bunt in between gave Nova Southeastern the early lead.
Nova's 1-0 lead would hold until the fifth when West Georgia broke through against NSU's starter Alex Mateo.
Cade Marlowe reached on a bunt single with two out before
Caleb Lopes singled and both runners scored on a double by
Dalton Rogers.
Garrett Hayes got the fourth consecutive hit of the inning, giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead.
That lead did not last long as the Sharks regained the lead and added more in the fifth. NSU scored two runs on three singles before the big blow, a three-run home run by Daniel Zardon, opened up a 6-3 lead in the fifth.
The Sharks added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch, but the Wolves got it back with another
Dalton Rogers RBI, this one on a groundout, in the seventh inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Nova Southeastern added three more runs and then another in the eighth.
Caleb Lopes led the Wolves offensively going 4-for-5 while
Dalton Rogers was 1-for-4 with a trio of RBI.
West Georgia falls to the losers bracket and will take on Claflin from the SIAC on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. from Tampa.
