TAMPA, FL - It took longer than your average game, but the West Georgia Wolves stayed alive on Friday at the NCAA South Regional defeating Claflin 7-0 in an elimination game in Tampa, Fla., giving West Georgia their first NCAA Postseason win in 18 years.
Caleb Lopes continued his hot hitting in the postseason as the junior shortstop is now hitting .560 in six postseason games with three home runs and seven RBI.
The first four innings were uneventful as neither team got much going before a storm rolled in, creating a 1:27 rain delay in the bottom half of the fourth.
The rain delay didn't cool off
Caleb Lopes as the junior hit a three-run bomb in the bottom half of the fifth, breaking the scoreless tie and hitting his ninth homer of the season, and his seventh hit of the tournament.
The Wolves were aided by a Claflin error in the bottom of the seventh and then three more in the eighth.
Drew Eady and
Payton Mann led off the inning with back-to-back hits and then came in to score on a pinch hit single by
Tyler Hutch.
Caleb Lopes then drove in his fourth run of the game with a single, scoring
Matthew Pope who pinch hit and reached on a walk.
Turner Edwards tossed seven shutout innings for head coach
Skip Fite, giving up just four hits and striking out 10 on the day.
Mitchell Mannino,
Ethan Hunter, and
Dalton Reagin each pitched in relief for the Wolves.
Caleb Lopes was the leader at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBI including the three-run homer.
Payton Mann also had a multi-hit game, with three hits in four tries. Hutch had one at-bat, earning the single at 2 RBI.
The win for the Wolves is the sixth win in the NCAA Tournament in school history, and gives UWG it's 40th win, marking the third season in school history with at least 40 wins.
West Georgia returns to action tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. taking on the loser of the Tampa and Dalta State Game.
