PENSACOLA, FL - The Wolves baseball squad got a fantastic effort from starting pitcher
Josh Morgan on Monday afternoon as they took down the top seed and Gulf South Conference tournament host West Florida by a final count of 3-1.
This marks the third time in four seasons that the West Georgia baseball team has gotten to the final three teams of the GSC Tournament.
How It Happened
Both starters brought their best stuff to Jim Spooner Field on Monday as there were only 12 hits combined on the day. Neither team got on the board until West Georgia broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning on a
Payton Mann single, scoring senior
Tyler Hutch who singled and later advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a UWF error.
Josh Morgan, who pitched his best game in a UWG uniform kept the potent West Florida offense at bay for six innings until the Argos finally broke through with a run in the seventh, tying things up at one.
A pair of seniors came up big for West Georgia in the top half of the ninth inning.
Caleb Lopes led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a
Garrett Hayes walk. After
Drew Eady used a sac bunt to move the runners up, senior
Keith Buckhault drove one deep to left field that scored Lopes, and gave the Wolves the lead.
Tyler Hutch then singled home Hayes for an extra insurance run in the final frame.
TJ Watson, who came on in relief of Morgan, pitched the final two innings, earning the win. Morgan's final line was seven innings pitched, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts, and two walks.
The Wolves got an RBI a piece from
Payton Mann,
Tyler Hutch, and
Keith Buckhault. Hutch, along with
Caleb Lopes each had two hits on the day.
What's Next
One more team will be eliminated this afternoon as Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama play in the afternoon game. West Georgia will be back in action in the nightcap in a rematch of last night's game. The Wolves and Delta State are scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. first pitch from Jim Spooner Field in Pensacola.
