CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves opened the Gulf South Conference series against Alabama Huntsville on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of the Chargers.
West Georgia opened with an 8-6 win in the early game, before coming back for an 8-4 win in the night cap.
In the series opener, Alabama Huntsville led off the game with a pair of singles off of UWG starter Taylor Boisclair, but the junior worked his way out of the jam with three consecutive outs to end the threat. In the bottom of the first, senior Center Fielder Cade Marlowe beat out an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Marlowe then stole third and came home on a fielding error to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
After the Chargers scored three in the top of the third, sophomore shortstop Joseph Hill delivered a one-out double to start a rally in the bottom of the inning. Logan Griffth and Brian Dansereau then walked to load the bases with two outs for Marlowe. The senior picked up his second hit of the day with a single through the right side to score Hill. Logan Taylor followed that with a double, clearing the bases and giving the Wolves a 5-3 advantage.
After an inning and a half of scoreless play, West Georgia opened the bottom of the fourth with three-straight singles from Brady Barnes, Dansereau and Marlowe to load the bases. Two batters later, Dan Oberst doubled down the right field line, delivering another three-run hit for the Wolves and giving West Georgia an 8-3 lead. UAH responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within two runs, forcing UWG head coach Skip Fite to go to his bullpen.
Ryan Parker came on in the inning, then worked his way through, allowing no runs on no hits in his first 1.2 innings of work, retiring the side in one of three innings where neither team scored a run in the sixth inning. That brought on a scoreless streak for both teams that stretched into the eighth inning. In that frame, Drew Hayles came on to pitch, striking out the side to preserve the Wolves' lead into the bottom of the inning. Hayes finished things off in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.
In game two, West Georgia fell behind early as UAH got on the board in the second, but in the bottom half, a Joseph Hill double would bring home Jermond Williams all the way from first, tying the game at 1-1. UAH then scored three unanswered runs, scoring one in the third and two in the fourth, opening up a 4-1 lead.
Skip Fite then went to the bullpen, bringing in the Greyson McLeod, who along with CJ Fehribach held the Chargers scoreless for the remaining three innings, setting up the UWG offense for a game two comeback.
West Georgia responded with a five spot in in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three UAH errors in the frame. Cade Marlowe started the scoring as he came across on a throwing error by UAH's catcher on Marlowe's attempt to steal third. Hill then picked up another RBI on a double and Lane Griffith added a pair on an two-RBI single up the middle. The fifth run of the inning came from another single, this one off the bat of Brady Barnes.
Leading 6-4 in the fifth, the Wolves got two more insurance runs as Dan Oberst homered to left center, scoring Logan Taylor who led off the frame with a single.
The Wolves go for the series sweep tomorrow at Cole Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
