CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves concluded a very tough weekend in Montevallo, Alabama on Sunday afternoon, using solid hitting and tough pitching to take a 7-4 victory in the conclusion to a three-game Gulf South Conference series with the Montevallo Falcons.
The win was the first for the Wolves this weekend, but in all three games, the two teams went into the final inning of the day with West Georgia either leading or with the game tied. The two previous saw Montevallo take a 2-0 lead in the series with a walk-off victory.
West Georgia came out on fire in this one, with senior Cade Marlowe opening a two-out rally in the top of the first with a bunt single. That kicked off a string of six consecutive UWG batters reaching base, producing four runs. Logan Taylor and Dan Oberst had back-to-back RBI doubles along with an RBI single from Jermond Williams and Brody Wortham. Tucker Breen also doubled in the inning and the only thing that kept Wortham from scoring on the play was the fence, as Breen's double bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. Despite that, the Wolves exited the top of the first having batted through the order and giving starter Cory Bartholomew a 4-0 cushion.
Bartholomew was strong early, allowing just one run through the first five innings while his offense built a 7-1 advantage. In the fourth inning, Lane Griffith delivered his second career home run, a solo shot that gave the Wolves a 5-0 lead. Then in the fifth, Williams doubled to bring home Oberst for the sixth run, then Wortham laced a single that scored Williams as both players ended up with two RBI in the first five innings.
In the sixth, Montevallo pushed three runs across to cut the UWG advantage to 7-4 against Bartholomew, and head coach Skip Fite went to his bullpen in the seventh with Wes Bucher coming on in relief. Bucher would close the door on the Falcons, allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts in the final three innings of play. Bartholomew took the victory and moved to 2-2 on the year and Bucher picked up his first save of the year.
Oberst, Williams, and Wortham each had two hits on the day to lead a UWG offensive effort that produced seven runs on 11 hits. Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, reaching base three times on the day with an additional walk. Oberst was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Wortham went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the game.
The Wolves move to 12-17 on the year and 8-9 in Gulf South Conference play.
