CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia offense was on full display on Tuesday afternoon in Dahlonega, Ga., as the Wolves pounded out 13 runs in a 13-3 victory over the North Georgia Nighthawks in the final non-conference game of the 2019 regular season.
Designated hitter Dan Oberst and second baseman Brian Dansereau provided the pop at the plate in this one, as the pair generated more than half of the 13 runs on the afternoon. Dansereau was stellar in the leadoff role, going 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI while Oberst was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the contest. Oberst scored three runs as well while Dansereau scored two.
The Oberst/Dansereau party started early, as Dansereau led off the game with a double, then came home three batters later on Oberst's home run, a two-run shot. The Nighthawks added a run in the bottom of the first, then the Wolves scored in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the third, West Georgia started to break things open, as Cade Marlowe and Logan Taylor opened the inning with back-to-back singles.
After Marlowe scored on a wild pitch, Oberst followed with a double that scored Taylor for a 5-1 lead. Later in the inning, Tucker Breen delivered an infield single that scored Oberst and the Wolves led 6-1. At that point, the two teams settled down, as North Georgia scored a single run in the bottom of third and again in the bottom of the sixth to pull within three at 6-3.
UWG put the game away in the top of the eighth as the Wolves loaded the bases, then Brody Wortham scored when Lane Griffith reached on a catcher's interference. Dansereau then worked the count full and blasted his fourth home run of the season, a grand slam to give West Georgia a commanding 11-3 lead. The Wolves added two more in the ninth for the final score.
Junior Cory Bartholomew got the start, working 5.2 innings to pick up his third victory of the year. Senior Wes Bucher pitched the final 3.1 innings to secure his second save of the season. The win moves West Georgia to 25-21 with three games remaining in the regular season schedule this weekend.
