Wolves Win over DSU in Second Round

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Seventh-seeded West Georgia swept through the state of Mississippi in the first two rounds of the 2019 Gulf South Conference Championships, taking down Mississippi College in the opener followed by Saturday's 10-3 victory over the third-seeded Delta State Statesmen at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.

The win for West Georgia was the second consecutive victory against a higher-seeded team in this year's tournament. The Wolves will now play in the final game of the day on Sunday at approximately 5 p.m. (EST). West Georgia will face the winner of the contest between top-seeded West Florida and fourth-seeded Alabama Huntsville.

UWG Starter Ryan Parker was the story of the game, scattering 11 hits over the course of eight innings. He struck out five and allowed just three runs to take the victory in the contest.

Delta State struck first in this one, plating a run off of Parker in the top of the first, but the Wolves struck back harder in the bottom of the inning. Brian Dansereau led off the bottom of the first with a single, then came home two batters later on Logan Taylor's two-run homer for a 2-0 lead. The Wolves weren't done yet, as Dan Oberst made it back-to-back homers with his second home run of the tournament to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the second, the Wolves got started early with a leadoff single from Dylan Johnson. Two batters later, Brady Barnes doubled to left field, bringing home Johnson with the fourth run of the game. The back-to-back theme continued in the next at-bat as Dansereau doubled to bring Barnes home with a 5-1 lead for the Wolves.

The third inning was relatively quiet, but Delta State looked to mount a comeback in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. Dansereau stayed hot, leading off the inning with a home run, then Cade Marlowe reached on an infield single. Taylor then doubled to the left field corner to score Marlowe, followed by a single from Oberst. After Brody Wortham walked, the fourth run of the inning came home when Joseph Hill was hit by a pitch, making it 9-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

Parker shut down the Statesmen in the top of the fifth, but the Wolves came right back with more in the bottom of the inning. Brady Barnes reached with one out, then after a spectacular catch robbed Dansereau of extra bases for the second out, Marlowe singled with Barnes on second to give the Wolves a 10-3 advantage.

Dansereau and Johnson each had three hits in the victory, with Dansereau picking up two runs scored and two RBI. The win moves West Georgia to 28-23 on the year.
