Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The combination of a blistering-hot
Dan Oberst and some stingy work from the bullpen carried the University of West Georgia baseball team to a 13-7 victory over Georgia College on Wednesday evening at Cole Field.
Oberst, the reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, is already making his case for a repeat run to that honor, erupting for a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with three more home runs and six RBI to ignite the offense in what has been an unbelievable stretch of play for the UWG senior first baseman over the past few weeks.
In his past six games, Oberst has gone 14-for-24 with six home runs, a triple, five walks, 10 runs scored and 15 RBI, lifting his average to .425 with nine home runs and 29 RBI on the season, all of which rank No. 1 in the GSC.
"He's swinging it well. I was excited he showed up today. He sure put up some numbers," UWG head coach
Jeff Smith said. "It was good watching him swing the bat. He's in the zone right now."
The West Georgia bullpen, meanwhile, allowed just one earned run over seven innings of work with one walk and three strikeouts. Sophomore
Troy Shepherd and freshman
Brady Simpson combined for five shutout frames, followed by an inning each from sophomore
Jenson Barker and sophomore
Peyton Berry to secure the 'W.'
Simpson earned the victory behind three shutout innings, helping the Wolves (10-10, 9-9 GSC) overcome an early 4-0 deficit with 12 unanswered runs by the offense and the tremendous shutdown job by the UWG bullpen.
"A midweek game with our game Friday being a doubleheader now, we staffed the game and our guys, after giving up four runs, they came in and settled down and pitched well. We put up a lot of zeros that helped us out there," Smith said. "Once the offense got going, we were doing well. It was fun."
After the Bobcats (11-6, 10-5 Peach Belt Conference) raced ahead with three runs in the first and another in the third, the UWG bats came alive behind the two-run blast by Oberst to cut the deficit in half.
Following a scoreless fourth, Oberst struck again, this time on a three-run shot to put the host squad up for good at 5-4.
The Wolves put up a 4-spot in the sixth, using a bases-loaded walk to junior center fielder
Jason Fointno and a two-run single by junior shortstop
Cody Mish, followed by Fointno scoring on a wild pitch.
In the seventh, the Wolves manufactured a run on a walk to sophomore second baseman
Brody Wortham, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, third on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman
Collin Moore and scored on another wild pitch. Webb tacked on another run with an RBI double.
The Bobcats got a pair of runs back in the top of the eighth, but Oberst had one last deep ball in him for good measure to cap off the offensive fireworks.
Along with the huge night from Oberst offensively, Webb (3-for-4, 2B, 2 runs, RBI) and Mish (2-for-4, 2B, 2 runs, 2 RBI) had multiple-hit efforts for the Wolves.
West Georgia closes out its seven-game homestand and returns to GSC play by hosting No. 6 Lee (17-2, 16-1) in a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. finale on Saturday at Cole Field.
