Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The return to The Coliseum was spoiled on Saturday afternoon, as the UWG women's basketball team fell 78-70 to the Mississippi College Choctaws.
West Georgia (6-9, 3-7 GSC) got a heroic effort from senior
Siera Carter on Saturday as the East Point native scored a career-high 29 points with eight rebounds, three steals, three assists and a pair of blocks.
But the Wolves couldn't overcome eight three-pointers from MC and a 47-33 margin on the glass in favor of Missississippi College (10-8, 5-6 GSC).
The Wolves led the majority of the half, opening up the scoring on a three-pointer from Carter on the opening possession. At the 3:20 mark, West Georgia led by five which ended up being their biggest lead of the night. With just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Mississippi College took a lead for the first time and held it for nearly the remainder of the game.
After leading 36-30 at the break, Mississippi College pushed their lead as high as nine in the third quarter, but the Wolves would fight back, drawing even with the Choctaws on a and-one play from Carter at the 9:23 mark of the final period.
With 4:38 left on the clock, the Wolves took the lead for the first time since the first quarter, and led by as much as four.
The back-breaker came with just over one minute remaining as MC got an old-fashioned three-point play followed by a UWG turnover and a deep three to turn a two-point deficit into a four-point lead in a 12-second span.
Mississippi College was able to pull away late at the charity stripe, shooting 8-for-10 from the line in the final quarter.
Carter led all scorers with 29, with UWG also getting
Valencia Carroll in double figures with 12 and
Jaylin Austin with 10. The Choctaws four in double-figures led by 15 from Kyiah Julian and 14 each from Ally Alford and Alana Canady.
It was the first victory in Carrollton for the Choctaws in school history. Prior to Saturday's result, UWG was 9-0 against Mississippi College in Carrollton.
West Georgia is back to the road on Wednesday, heading to Jackson, Tennessee to take on a ranked Union Bulldogs team. That game tips off at 6:30 p.m.
