Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – A sweep was not meant to be for the UWG softball team as the Wolves dropped the finale, 8-5, in Jackson, Tennessee on Saturday.
West Georgia (8-12, 2-7 GSC) won the series, however, after yesterdays doubleheader sweep, but Union (6-13, 3-6 GSC) salvaged the finale at Fesmire Field.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak over Union that dated back to 2019.
Union got on the board first, pushing across the game's opening run in the second inning. Kaley dowdy got the start and after giving up two baserunners to start the second, she made way for
Macy Ann McKnight. Dowdy was charged with the run as Union went to the squeeze play to take a 1-0 lead.
West Georgia tied things up in the fourth as
Kristyn Nix led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, and tagged up on a fly ball to get to third.
Alley Taylor then picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as Nix broke for home and slid in under the tag.
In the next half inning, Union got three runs on four hits and an error to regain a lead at 4-1 through four innings.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth, getting three more runs on three hits, three walks, and an error, eventually chasing McKnight and forcing the Wolves to go the pen again, bringing in
Emma Worley.
West Georgia got two in the sixth, with
Ava Ramirez picking up a pinch hit RBI and Taylor coming in on a wild pitch.
After the Bulldogs got an eighth run in the bottom half, UWG got two in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Union took the finale.
The Wolves had 10 hits on the day with six coming from the one through four hitters in the lineup.
Chandler Mevis and
R.J. Janke led the way with two hits each. Taylor led with a pair or RBIs in the loss.
UWG is back home next weekend for a three-game series against Shorter. The Wolves and Hawks are scheduled to begin their series on Friday night.
