Box Score 2 AMERICUS, Ga. – The UWG softball team came up on the short end of a pair of one-run contest on Tuesday, being swept by Georgia Southwestern in non-conference action.
West Georgia (11-26) led late in game one, but Georgia Southwestern (27-16) pushed three runs across in their final at-bat to force extra innings, where the eventually prevailed, 5-4. The Wolves fell in a pitcher's duel in the finale of Tuesday's doubleheader by a 2-1 final.
It was just the second and third time Georgia Southwestern has won in the series since 2017, as UWG was 9-1 in the previous 10 matchups.
Game One
Georgia Southwestern used a seventh inning comeback to claim a game one win in extra innings.
The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead on a triple and an error in the first inning, and held that lead until the fourth when
Hannah Scarbrough scored on an RBI double by
Alley Taylor. The next batter reached a fielder's choice and Taylor would come around to score on a GSW error.
West Georgia added a run in the sixth on a
Jacie Arrington home run, and another in the seventh on an RBI double by Scarbrough that pushed across
Kristyn Nix.
Down by three in the seventh, Georgia Southwestern mounted a rally against UWG starter
Macy Ann McKnight, tying things up in the contest. GSW nearly won the game in regulation, by Arrington threw out what would be the winning run at the plate to make the final out in the seventh.
Playing the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth, UWG bunted the runner over to third, and then attempted to score on a squeeze, but the bunt attempt was popped up and made for an easy out for the GSW defense.
In the bottom of the eighth, GSW got the bunt down on their squeeze attempt, as the winning run slid in under the tag.
West Georgia had six hits from six different player in the game including one each from the top four in the lineup. Arrington led the way with a pair of RBIs.
Game Two
A second straight one-run loss was the fate of the Wolves in game two as both teams got good pitching with UWG and GSW combining for only 10 hits in the game.
Kaley Dowdy started for the Wolves, allowing just four hits in six innings pitched, putting together one of the best performances of the year, despit the loss. Two of those GSW hits came in the third inning, which pushed across one of the Hurricanes' runs, and the second came across on a UWG error. Dowdy pitched around five walks in the game, and struck out seven batters on the night.
West Georgia's only run came off the bat of
Maddie Gorsuch, whose second inning solo shot gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Gorsuch, along with
Alley Taylor had two-hit games to combine for four of UWG's six hits in the game.
In the top of the seventh, UWG got a runner on as
Hannah Scarbrough was hit by a pitch, and then she got into scoring position with a stolen base, but the visiting Wolves couldn't push the tying run across, dropping their 11
th consecutive game.
Notable Numbers
- Kristyn Nix had a single in game one to push her hit streak to 19 consecutive games, but was 0-for-3 in game two, ending the streak there.
- It was the second home run in as many games for Arrington, who now has four on the season, and six in her career.
- Maddie Gorsuch now has four home runs on the season and five in her career.
- Dowdy's seven strikeouts were a career high for the sophomore.
