CARROLLTON, Ga. - Just eight days separate the University of West Georgia baseball team and opening day, and today we take a look at the outfield in part two of our three part position by position breakdown.
Returning for another season to lead the Wolves in center field is preseason All-GSC selection
Anthony Calabro. Calabro was second on the 2022 squad with a .343 batting average, racking up 58 hits, seven doubles, two triples, and eight home runs. The St. Johns, Florida native was also named to the first team All-GSC for his efforts in 2022.
"Anthony is one of our leaders," said head coach
Jeff Smith. "He's the guy in the lineup that gets things going for us offensively and does an outstanding job defensively," added Smith.
Also returning for the Wolves to patrol the corner outfield spots are
Logan Fink and
Edgar Cruz. Fink, who saw a bulk of his playing time come in the second half of the 2022 season, played in 39 contests last season, making 34 starts and posting a .285 batting average. Fink was one of four players to have more than 10 doubles last season, while also smashing seven home runs.
Cruz, on the other hand, played in 30 games in 2022, making 22 starts. The Temple, PA native hit .305 and in just 82 at bats slugged two doubles, two triples, and one home run.
"Logan will be in right field mostly, and Edgar will split time in both corner outfield spots as well as the DH position," said Smith. "Both of those guys are upperclassmen and the expectation for them is to have big years," Smith added.
UWG will also debut several newcomers in 2023, including
Joseph Glozier and
Cooper Prince. Glozier, a freshman from Peachtree City, posted a .355 batting average in his senior season at McIntosh High School, while Prince, a junior college transfer from Snead State, posted a .337 average in his lone season with the Parsons.
"Cooper is a guy that can hit anywhere in the lineup. He's a guy that runs extremely well and has a great presence in the box when he's at the plate," said Smith.
The Wolves open their 2023 season on Friday, February 3, when they welcome the Augusta Jaguars to Cole Field for a three game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Part three, and the final part, of our position by position preview of UWG Baseball will be released Thursday, February 2, as we preview the pitching staff.
