CARROLLTON, Ga. – Track season is officially here as the University of West Georgia Women's Track team is set to kick off their 2023 indoor season at the BSC Panther Icebreaker on Friday at 9:00 a.m. on the campus of Birmingham Southern.
"This team has been working hard to prepare for the Indoor season," said head coach
Ryan Bailey. "I am excited to see how well they perform tomorrow. The team looks very strong. We have been working on our depth as a team and I think we are going to see the dividends of that effort tomorrow."
West Georgia is set to participate in four events with those events being the 3000m, 4000mDMR, one mile, 1000m races.
3000m Race
Ama Ahovi,
Madeline Gaskin,
Catherine Greer, and
Kristal McQueen are the quartet of Wolves set to compete in the 3000m race. Ahovi enters her third year in the program after primarily competing in the 800m and 1500m races last season, while Gaskin and Greer are both regulars in the 3000m race. Gaskin set a new lifetime best last season with a time of 11:45.88 while Greer closed last year, by setting a new career best with a time of 11:42.80. As for McQueen, she enters her first collegiate track meet after shining on the cross-country scene this past fall.
One Mile Race
Stephanie Beltran, Jordan Jarnot,
Kathrin Maurer, and
Kaitlyn Pierce are the four that will compete in the one-mile race. Last year, Beltran ran her fastest mile time at the South Carolina Invitational, finishing in 6.23.71, while Jarnot, Maurer, and Pierce are set to make their UWG debuts.
1000m Race
Joycelyn Tifrea will represent West Georgia in the 1000m race. Tifrea will make her introduction to the event after competing regularly in the 1500m and one-mile races throughout her UWG career.
4000mDMR
The Wolves will have two groups participating in the 4000mDMR with Squad A consisting of Ahovi, Tifrea, McQueen,
Maniyah Thomas,
Valeyna Renteria-Silva,
Alexis Doll, and
Olivia Fulford. Fulford, Renteri-Silva, and Doll will also be a part of Squad B and will be joined by Pierce, Greer, and Gaskin.
Friday's meet is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on the campus of Birmingham Southern.
