Game One: UWG 9 , Lee 8
The Wolves (0-0, 0-0 GSC) got the fireworks going early after
Henry Daniels singled with two outs in the first,
Anthony Calabro launched a ball over the center field wall to put the Wolves up 2-0 early. The Flames (0-0, 0-0 GSC) immediately answered in the bottom of the first with three of their own, taking advantage of two UWG errors to gain the lead right back.
Neither side did anything in the second, but Calabro continued to add on to his day in the third as he blasted his second home run of the game into the cloudy afternoon sky, putting the Wolves back on top 4-3.
The Flames were able to chase
Bay Witcher from the game in the third, as the fifth year senior went just 2.1 innings on the afternoon, giving up three hits, three runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Nick Morgan replaced Witcher on the mound and immediately surrendered a two-run home run, as Lee took the lead right back at 5-4.
Smith made his second call to the bullpen in the fourth inning, calling on
Jonathan Hickman after Morgan gave up a lead-off double to Malachi Cloud. Cloud stole third and came around to score on a sac fly later in the inning, pushing the Flames lead to 6-4 through four innings. Lee would add another in the fifth on a wild pitch to give them a 7-4 lead going into the sixth.
UWG finally got to Sam Fulton once again in the sixth as Calabro drew a lead-off walk which was followed by an RBI double by
Cooper Prince to chip into the lead. One is all the Wolves could get in the sixth, but Hickman struck out the side in the bottom half, keeping the score 7-5 moving to the seventh.
UWG got things going in the seventh inning thanks to a lead-off walk by
Tyler Presnell. Ladner grounded into a fielder's choice to replace Presnell, and
Cade Hohl drove a single into the outfield and moved up to second on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with one out. Daniels promptly provided a sac fly to score Ladner, bringing the Wolves to within one. Calabro once again delivered, driving in his fifth RBI of the game to bring in Hohl to tie the game at seven.
Logan Fink got in on the RBI party as he drove in Calabro with a single of his own to put the Wolves on top 8-7. UWG was not done at the plate, however, as Prince delivered his second RBI base hit of the game to score Fink and make the score 9-7.
Peyton Berry relieved Hickman on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and proceeded to sit the Flames down in order, sending us forward with a two run lead needing just six outs for the win.
Presnell once again got the offense started in the 8th with a lead-off single, but a fielder's choice by Lander and a 6-3 double play ended the threat.
After retiring the lead-off hitter in the 8th, the Flames used a solo home run by Riley Black to cut the UWG lead to 9-8. Berry settled back into the inning and retired the next two batters, sending the Wolves to the final frame clutching a one run lead.
In the ninth, the Wolves were sat down in order, and Berry returned to complete the nine out save. Berry retired the next three hitters to secure the 9-8 victory for the Wolves.
Calabro finished game one 3-4 at the plate with the two big home runs and five RBI's. Prince also added two hits and two RBI's of his own.
Hickman received the win on the mound pitching 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, one run, and three strikeouts. Berry received the save in game one also pitching three innings, allowing just one hit, one run, and striking out three.
Game Two: Lee 2, UWG 1
Game Two of the double header turned into a classic pitching battle as both sides combined for just three hits in the nightcap.
After being retired in order to start game two,
Chase Townsend took the mound for UWG looking to sweep the double header and win the series. After back to back walks had runners at first and second with no outs, Townsend settled into the game, retiring the next three hitters in a row to strand a pair and keep the game tied.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the second inning after
Anthony Calabro was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Calabro was scored by a Prince sac fly, putting the Wolves up 1-0 going to the bottom of the second.
The free passes came back to bite Townsend and the Wolves in the third inning as the Flames cashed in two walks in the inning with a 2 out double from
Riley King, putting the Flames on top 2-1 through three innings.
Townsend was replaced by
Ryan Whitener in the fourth, as he allowed two runs on just two hits, but walked five batters in his three innings of work. Even though two runners reached, Whitener blanked the Flames in the fourth, holding the Lee lead to just one through four innings.
Both sides went cold offensively at that point, as neither side recorded a hit after the fourth inning. Jack Nedrow went on to throw a seven inning no hitter for the Flames, allowing just the one run, two walks, and struck out nine batters.
The series will conclude with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
