Box Score FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The University of West Georgia baseball team got back to their winning ways after defeating the Emmanuel Lions 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves scored nine unanswered runs from the fourth inning on to halt their four game losing streak and secure win #26 on the year.
Neither side did anything in the first, and in the second
Jared Emory started the inning with a lead off single, but was stranded at second and the Wolves remained scoreless through two.
Jack Rasmussen, the Wolves starter, continued his dominance on the mound, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard and sending the game to the third tied 0-0.
The Wolves (26-11, 13-8 GSC) were once again held scoreless in the third, and
Chase Townsend came in to pitch the bottom half. Townsend was cruising right along getting two quick outs before surrendering a walk and a two run home run, giving the Lions an early 2-0 lead. After surrendering back-to-back walks right after, head coach
Jeff Smith had to call on
Jake Jordan to finish the third. One pitch into his outing, a double steal caused an errant throw into center from Webb, allowing a third run to come across to score. Jordan did get the very next batter to ground out, but the Lions did their damage and took a 3-0 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth,
Anthony Calabro led the inning off with a double and then immediately stole third, giving the Wolves their best chance to score of the game up to that point. One batter later,
Logan Fink singled through the left side, scoring Calabro and plating the first run of the game for UWG. After Fink moved to third on a wild pitch and a groundout from
Cooper Prince, he came in to score on an RBI single from
Jackson Webb, adding another for UWG in the inning. One batter later,
Joseph Glozier singled up the middle to score Webb and tie the game at three.
Both sides went quietly in the fifth, and the Wolves went back to work in the sixth. Emory led off the inning with a single and the Wolves loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Glozier brought in the first run of the inning with a sac fly, and later in the inning, the Lions could not handle a throw down on a seal, allowing Prince to score.
Cade Hohl joined the RBI single party to score Webb, the third of the inning. Ladner grounded out to end the inning, but the damage had been done and the Wolves led for the first time into the bottom of the sixth.
Ezra Brown held the Lions scoreless in the bottom half, and UWG got right back on the scoreboard in the seventh thanks to a lead off solo home run from
Henry Daniels. Calabro then reached on a single, stole second, took third on a groundout, and came in to score on a wild pitch scoring the eighth unanswered run for the Wolves in the game. Webb brought in another in the inning with a double, and the Wolves led 9-3 at the stretch.
Neither side scored in the eighth, and in the bottom of the ninth,
Ryan Whitener was called on to finish off the game to secure the victory. Whitener did allow two base runners, but got a pop out to end the game and secure the victory for UWG.
The Wolves are back in action on Friday in Rome to take on the Shorter Hawks. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
