Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss.. - The longest Gulf South Conference road trip would not provide a victory on Saturday for the UWG softball team as the Wolves fell twice to Delta State in a GSC doubleheader.
West Georgia (13-36, 8-18 GSC) couldn't get any offense going in game one, dropping the opener 6-0 before falling in a one-run decision in the final game of Saturday's twin bill to Delta State (17-31, 11-15 GSC).
GAME ONE
West Georgia's offense was shutout in game one and limited to just three hits. Delta State's offense scored runs in each of the first four innings including a three-spot in the second.
UWG did not get their first hit until the fifth inning when freshmen Emerson Miller and Caroline Redden both singled with no-one out, but a line drive double play would end the threat.
Macy Ann McKnight pitched the first two innings and gave up four innings and Katie Morris gave up two runs in four innings of relief. Morris struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk.
GAME TWO
In the second game, UWG took the first lead, pushing across a run in the first. It started with an Addison Sturdivant single, and she would later score on an RBI single by R.J. Janke.Â
DSU would push across three runs in the second inning, taking a lead they would never give back.
After a DSU run in the third made it 4-1, Lady Statesmen, the Wolves cut the deficit to two in the fourth inning on a leadoff home run by Rylee Green.
An error by the Lady Statesmen plated a run in the fifth for the Wolves, making it a one-run 4-3 game, but DSU responded with a fifth-inning run of their own that proved to be a big insurance run.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, Madison Vandergriff cashed in a leadoff walk by Ava Ramirez as she singled in a run to make it 5-4, and then another lineup double play ended a scoring chance for UWG and DSU would hold on for the win.
Sturdivant had two of UWG's seven hits, as did senior Chandler Mevis. Vandergriff, Janke, and Green each picked up RBIs in the loss.
Katie Morris pitched the complete game, allowing five runs, all earned on 10 hits over six innings.
