Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG women's tennis team began their 2024 season with a pair of wins on Monday afternoon at Sunset Hills Country Club.
It began with a clean sweep of the Point Skyhawks as the Wolves cruised to a 7-0 win, not dropping a single set in the season opener. The Wolves then swept Wallace State in the night cap to start the season 2-0.
"It was a long day, but a great day as we got a big double sweep," said head coach
Rhonda Bush. "The girls played great today and I'm proud of how they started this season."
UWG 7, Point 0
Doubles set the tone for the Wolves in the opener, as
Rebeca Lopez and
Futaba Saito went 6-0 in line one doubles, and
Kendall Haden and
Elle Jones did the same in second doubles. That clinched the doubles point for the Wolves, and the third line doubles was forfeited.
In singles, the Wolves dominated lines one, three, and five, and picked up a forfeit in the sixth singles slot. Andre Medel won her match over Camila Vangegas 6-2, 6-0 in first singles, while
Futaba Saito went 6-0, 6-0 in third singles over Jenny Zapien. Fifth singles was another sweep as
Elle Jones defeated Destinie Claggion, 6-0 and 6-0.
Second singles was the closest match of the day but
Rebeca Lopez prevailed, winning the first set over Lauren Perez 6-0, before a tie break was needed in the second set to win 7-6.
In fourth singles,
Luna Mouton won the opening set 6-1 before taking the second 6-3 over Ana Olano.
UWG 5, Wallace State
In the nightcap, the match started with singles play, with UWG earning all six points. Lea Von Kozierowski won first singles 6-2 and 6-3 over Noelle D'Angellio while
Sophie Mnich swept her season debut in second singles over Italia Jones.
Karla Menendez went 6-1, 6-3 in third singles to win her match over Lexie Luders.
In fourth singles,
Kendall Haden won the opening set 6-0 before clinching the match with a 6-1 second set victory over Lilly Brown. Fifth singles was another clean sweep, this one from
Callie Stanfield over Nat Vergava.
Perrine Blachon won her first set 6-4 in sixth singles, and then closed it out with a 6-0 second set over Anne Von Bingbeugen.
UWG won the first two doubles lines 6-0 to earn the doubles point as Von Kozierowski and Mnich paired up in first doubles and Menendez and Mouton won the second line. Third doubles was a 6-2 win for Blachon and Stanfield.
