No. 13 Wolves Set to Begin GSC Tournament with Super Tuesday Matchup Against Bulldogs

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team is set to begin the 2024 GSC Tournament on Super Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as they welcome the Union Bulldogs to The Coliseum.

No. 13 West Georgia (23-5, 19-5 GSC) enters the GSC Tournament as the one seed while Union (14-14, 11-13 GSC) enters as the eight seed.

"Union's got some really talented players and they've been playing well here lately," said head coach Dave Moore. "They're one of those teams that's emerging and they've won their way into the Tournament here by having a good final two weeks of the season. When you get into the Gulf South Tournament and the top-eight teams are playing, anyone can beat anyone."

The Wolves swept the season series against the Bulldogs, beating them 78-66 in The Coliseum and 93-79 in Jackson, Tennessee.  Like most teams, Union struggled on the offensive end against West Georgia as they combined to shoot a 39.2 percent from the field and 19 percent from three in both games. Zawdie Jackson dominated both meetings against Union as he averaged 29.5 points, 5.0 assists on 70 percent shooting, including a season-high 34-point performance in the second matchup.

Speaking of Jackson, he leads UWG into post-season play after averaging 21.5 points, 5.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game on 52|47|85 percent shooting splits in the regular season. The point guard has led the Wolves all season long and if West Georgia wants to hoist a GSC Championship by the end of this weekend, they're going to need Jackson to continue his excellent play, beginning with their Quarterfinal matchup against Union on Tuesday.

After suffering his hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago, Camron Donatlan seems to be back to 100 percent. In his last two games, Donatlan is averaging 18.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, pushing his regular season averages to 17.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists per game on 49.3 percent shooting. The guard is arguably the best athlete on the floor in every game that he plays in and that isn't going to change on Tuesday night against a Union back court that can struggle at times on the defensive end.

While Jackson and Donatlan account for a large percentage of UWG's points this season, Marlon Smith continues to be an elite scoring threat off the bench. Smith ends his first collegiate regular season, averaging 10.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game on 43 percent shooting and 39 percent from three. While the Wing is one of the better scorers on the team and the league, he is very underrated on the defensive end. The junior's length, quickness, and athleticism contributes to his shot-blocking ability which is one of the best on the roster.

Union finished the regular season, ranking seventh in the GSC in scoring and scoring defense, by averaging 77.5 points per game and holding opposing teams to 76.8 points per game. The Bulldogs are led by their combo guard Ahmad Johnson. Johnson leads the team and sits fifth in the league in scoring with 17.1 points per game on 46 percent shooting and 39 percent from three. Standing at 6'4", Johnson is a tough cover for anyone with his ability to raise up and shoot over the top of most guards in the conference. This season against UWG, the guard is averaging 15 points per game on 43 percent shooting.

Outside of Johnson, the Bulldogs just may possess the GSC Freshman of the Year on their roster in Jordan Pyke. Pkye is a 6'7" forward who is averaging 13.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game on an efficient 52 percent shooting. As a true freshman, Pkye is already one of the best slashers in the league and has been getting to the rim at will all season long. West Georgia struggled to contain the freshman in their two matchups against Union as Pyke comes into Super Tuesday averaging 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds against the Wolves this season, including a 29-point, 15-rebound double-double in their first meeting in the Coliseum.

"Union as an eight-seed is a really good team that can beat a lot of people," coach Moore continued. "We're going to have to be ready and prepare the right way."

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside The Coliseum.
