UWG in Third After Day One of ASUN Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The UWG men's track and field team put up 11 points on Thursday and sit in third place after day one of the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships. 

Only three events were finalized and scored overall and UWG only had representatives in two of those events. The Wolves had one podium finish on Thursday, and three scorers in the pole vault. 

DECATHLON 
Two Wolves, Rhett Howard and Kellen Andrews, opened the Championships by competing in the decathlon. The event started with the 100m dash, and Howard placed second with a time of 11.19 while Andrews finished fifth at 11.50. 

In the long jump, Andrews placed fourth and Howard took fifth while Howard placed third in the shotput and Andrews took fourth. 

Andrews notched a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.78m while Howard took fifth in that event at 1.63m. The last of six Thursday events was the 400m dash, which was won by Howard, putting him in fourth place overall with 3,014 points. Andrews finished fourth in the 400m dash, and is in fifth overall with 3,004 points. 

THROWS 
Nicholas Lane finished 10th in the hammer throw, with a top mark of 45.24m while Darius McNeal took 12th with a 43.96m throw. 

POLE VAULT 
Conner McLain continued his solid freshman campaign with a podium finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.57m to finish third, leading a group of five Wolves in the event. 

Shea Thiewes finished fifth at 4.37m to gain points for UWG as did Samuel Hall in eighth with a clearance of 4.02m. 

In 10th was Rhett Howard while Kellen Andrews placed 12th. 

SPRINTS AND HURDLES 
Of the two Wolves competing in the 400m hurdle prelims, Landon Chavonic was the only Wolf to advance to the finals, finishing ninth with a time of 58.30. Rhett Howard finished 10th with a time of 1:06.41. 

Later in the 200m prelims, two Wolves got through to the finals, led by Kasahn Rivers with a time of 21.45, which was the third fastest time overall and the fastest time in his heat. Matthew Strickland qualified with a time of 21.76 which was eighth overall. 

Michael Willis finished 14th in the 200m, Donavin Butts finished in 19th and Jaylen Patterson finished 21st.

DAY TWO 
Day two is set to begin with the decathlon's 110m hurdles at 8 a.m. with the final event for the Wolves being the 800m at 8:15 p.m.
